Job Summary
Dominion Energy has a Heavy Equipment Operations Technician l or Technician II position available located out of West Columbia, SC, within the Facilities Management Department.
The level of the position will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
This position will be responsible for all aspects of construction practices respective to heavy equipment operations associated with civil activities in the field. They will be required to direct outside contractors to support active projects and ensure all safety measures are being followed. This includes ability to perform grading, read grade stakes, engineer plans/drawings, recognize mechanical equipment issues, ability to operate efficiently construction equipment including but not limited to dozers, rubber-tired backhoes, excavators, compactors, dump trucks, motorgrader, gradall, pan, etc. associated with construction activities. This position will perform storm water, erosion control activities and inspections. This position will be responsible for completing proper documentation describing work completed, recommended solutions, proficient computer skills for entering equipment time and labor respective to proper accounting allocations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Facilities Tech I: 0-2 years of related experience.
- Must be experienced in multiple crafts and have a working knowledge of all phases of maintenance and general construction with an emphasis on commercial and/or heavy equipment construction.
- 5 years’ experience in maintenance and/or construction is desirable
- Required to supervise sub-contractors on a regular basis
- Must be self-directed and motivated
- Must be capable of following instructions without direct supervision
- Must be able to perform take-off work up to $25,000.00
- Must be capable of lifting heavy objects and performing manual tasks
- Must be able to grade with all grading equipment (Ex: dozer, rubber-tired backhoe, excavator, motor grader, pan, etc.)
- Must be able to perform any manual task associated with related construction work
- Must be able to recognize and willing to repair minor mechanical problems
- Must be able to read grade stakes/plans and rough grade accordingly
- Must be willing to fill in as needed for truck drivers on an “as needed” basis
- Must be able to load and transport all heavy equipment utilizing Low Boy or other appropriate trailer once CDL “A” is acquired
Facilities Tech II: 5-7 years of related experience.
- Must be experienced in multiple crafts and have a working knowledge of all phases of maintenance and general construction with an emphasis on commercial or heavy equipment construction.
- 5-10 years’ experience in maintenance and/or construction is desirable
- Able to operate and run heavy equipment
- Required to substitute for the Lead Tech when necessary
- Perform take-off work on projects of less than $50,000.00
- Schedule and coordinate the work of subcontractors on a routine basis in a project environment
- Must be capable of lifting heavy objects and performing manual tasks
- Must have good communications skills
- Must be able to read site plans and direct job accordingly
- Must be able to read grade instruments (level) and stake job as required
- Must be able to fine grade will all grading equipment
- Must be able to load and transport all heavy equipment utilizing Low Boy or other appropriate trailer
- Must have (5-10) years’ experience in heavy equipment construction
- Ability to perform any manual task associated with related construction work
- Must be willing and able to recognize and repair minor mechanical problems
- Must be willing to fill in for truck drivers on an “as needed” basis
- Familiarity with personal computers and the ability to use SAP, Microsoft products, and computer-operated maintenance equipment
- Effective written and verbal communications
- Knowledge of regulatory and environmental standards
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, technical drawings, and manuals
- Ability to lead contractors supporting projects
Education Requirements
Required Degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree): High School Graduate or GED
Preferred degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Associate
Preferred Discipline(s): Civil Construction Technology
Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
- Must have valid SC driver’s license
- Must have or ability to complete required training within (6) months for a South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “A”
- General Grading Contractor’s License (preferred)
- Mine safety health Administration Certificate (MSHA)
- CEPSCI Certification (preferred)
- Class 3 Landfill Manager Certification (preferred)
