Job Summary

Millstone Power Station in Waterford, CT is seeking a Senior Nuclear Fuel Handler.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Safe handling of all nuclear fuel on site, performance of work in all spent fuel pools, operation of refueling and fuel handling equipment, maintenance of fuel management procedures, special nuclear materiaI (SNM) inventory performance, new fuel receipt, and fuel handler training.
  • The Senior Nuclear Fuel Handlers will function as shift leads for vessel disassembly, reassembly and nuclear fuel movement during refueling outages providing technical assistance and direction to less experienced technicians and contract staff.
  • The Senior Nuclear Fuel Handlers will provide technical assistance and direction to Fuel Handling and contract staff as requested by supervision.
  • Comply with all Technical Specification, Technical Requirements Manual, and procedure requirements during fuel handling operations.
  • Perform Special Nuclear Material and Non-Special Nuclear Material Inventories in the Spent Fuel Pools and New Fuel Storage Vaults.
  • Handle non-fuel material in the New Fuel Vaults and Spent Fuel Pools.
  • Maintain the material condition of the Spent Fuel Pools and fuel handling/ inspection equipment.
  • Perform maintenance/testing/surveillances on fuel handling equipment prior to fuel and material handling operations.
  • Maintain/perform Fuel Handling Training as required.
  • Seek opportunities for cost effective program/process improvements and take action to implement changes.
  • Individuals qualifying for this top level position shall at minimum hold current qualifications on the operational Millstone units to operate all fuel handling equipment, Individual shall be capable of working independently carrying out complex tasks and activities.
  • The individual shall have the demonstrated ability to lead groups of individuals in complex tasks to a positive and productive outcome.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned. These duties may include but not limited to the following:
    • Procurement of vendor services, materials and supplies for the work group
    • Generation and review of technical procedures
    • Set-up, Operation and Maintenance of underwater cameras and robotics equipment
    • Provide training to fuel handling and vendor staff
    • Database management
    • Scheduling and coordination of work activities
    • Perform maintenance on fuel handling tools, equipment and mechanical reactor tooling
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
  • Five years of related experience in operations, refueling outage, or Reactor Engineering (A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications.)
  • Qualifications (or ability to qualify) in: Fuel Handling, Fuel receipt, use of special tooling for fuel related processes, Rigging and load handling, FMEA monitor/worker, confined space, fall protection.
  • Function as lead for reactor head area maintenance tasks and fuel handling.
  • Assist the supervisor in the monitoring and delegation of work assignments in the supervisor's absence.
  • Able to handle the most complex work and all aspects of the job using wide knowledge of the field and mastery (advanced knowledge, skill and/or abilities that provides subject matter authority and superior command in a particular job) of the subject matter.
  • May provide input in setting objectives and policy, identifying critical issues and introducing new concepts.
  • Makes decisions independently.
  • Provides assistance, advice, and solutions to peers, customers, and co-workers. Identifies and implements better work alternatives and business processes.
  • Must be qualified and able to perform the responsibilities and tasks of the position to accurately read, interpret, and comply with company/department procedures, provide attention to detail, and to minimize errors.
  • Capable of working with mechanical tools and working knowledge of plant systems and their functions pertinent to plant administrative requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability and can delegate and direct department work activities as designated by supervision.
  • Position requires maintaining unescorted plant access qualification, maintaining enclosed volume and radiation worker qualifications, maintaining Station Emergency Response Organization (SERO) qualifications, and supporting non-core work schedules (night shift) to support the needs of the plant.
  • Individual must be able to meet the physical job requirements of this position and support the department's on-call responsibilities.
  • Individuals shall qualify in the operation of fuel handling equipment at all three Millstone units.
  • Individuals shall qualify on ISFSI Dry Cask storage tasks for the long term storage of nuclear fuel.
