Job Summary

This Engineering Intern position located at Surry Nuclear Power Station in Mineral, Virginia, assists with various duties such as engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, may assist with routine assignments designed to develop engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc.  

The Engineer Intern position is associated with the embedded Electric Transmission organization providing technical expertise in all areas related to transmission & distribution operations & maintenance.  The position provides support of the Electric Transmission group with focus on the programmatic functions associated with operating and maintaining a Nuclear Power Station.  The position includes support of activities associated with other Dominion Nuclear Power Stations, combustion turbine sites, and a service territory consisting of several local non-nuclear transmission/distribution substations.  

  • Provides station and switchyard technical support to the generation plant for high voltage transmission and distribution equipment. 
  • Help to insure work orders, work scheduling, Plant Issues, Root Cause / Apparent Cause Evaluations, and SOER reviews are completed to support station requirements.
  • Assist with secondary engineering review of work packages before and after work evolutions.
  • Support Electrical Equipment Technicians in substation inspections.
  • Assist with weekly equipment walk-downs.
  • Work with transmission training and methods support personnel.
  • Collaborate with Nuclear Engineering personnel to support electric power systems, component, and design functions.
  • Assist System Protection, Electrical Equipment, and Substations personnel within the Nuclear work management process to ensure compliance.
  • Assist System Protection, Electrical Equipment, and Substations personnel within the various work activities in the field.
  • Assist with planning and scheduling activities associated with major refueling outages or design changes.
  • Support safety and human performance initiatives.
  • Maintain training and qualifications to hold a Nuclear Unescorted Access Authorization (UAA) badge.
  • Perform various other duties as required to include various work locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Basic knowledge of Engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory.
  • Must have great oral and written communication skills.
  • Good Computer skills.
  • Analytical skills

Education Requirements

  • Candidates must have an anticipated graduation date of spring 2020 or later
  • Candidates must hold a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must be pursuing a 4-year ABET accredited Bachelor degree in Engineering 
    • Preference on Electrical disciplines
