Engineering Technical Consultant/Engineer III

Job Summary

There is one position which will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidates education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.

This role is the top progression level position in the Engineer series.  Includes senior to technical expert engineers, able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within functional assignment area.  Schedules and coordinates major segments of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives.  Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.  Devises new approaches to problems encountered and develops engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards.  At higher levels of proficiency within this classification, incumbents are expected to provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed.  Provides guidance to less experienced Engineers.  May be required to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to major projects that have significant impact on programs in varied areas and related fields. May serve as a technical expert on engineering related legal and regulatory issues to outside entities.

The primary responsibilities of this position will be to review and coordinate all work associated with Power Delivery in support of Surry Power Station and the surrounding substations.  The position will be responsible for attending all necessary daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed meetings associated with work coordination.  The position will be responsible for representing Power Delivery’s interest in work in and around the station.  The role will include reviewing all work and ensuring the work can be completed and does not cause any undo contingencies or reliability issues both at the power station or on the electric grid.  The role will also be the primary point of contact for all Power Delivery groups supporting work at the station to include, but not limited to ET Substation, ET Line, Electrical Equipment, System Protection, Metering, Distribution Operations, Distribution Construction, Distribution Network, ET Construction, Environmental and other groups as needed.  The role will be responsible for submitting all necessary forms or request for outages, tagging and/or other outage related paperwork.  The role will require having technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to prevent undo risk to both the power station and the bulk electric grid.  Provide Electric Transmission technical support/responses for Nuclear CRs/REAs/LEEs. Support development of Engineer I.  Preferred experience with Plant and ET practices/processes.

Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skill, abilities, and education required for entry into this job include the following:

Engineer III: 5+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

Engineering Technical Consultant: 7+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

In-depth and comprehensive knowledge of engineering principals, theories, and practices.

In-depth knowledge of industry codes, government regulations and company policies and practices.

In-depth knowledge of design and operation of complex systems and equipment.

Ability to apply expert knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve complex and broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

Ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

Strong oral, written and graphical communication skills including technical writing; ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.

Equally effective working independently and in a team environment.

Superior organization and project management skills and evaluation techniques.

Excellent personal computer skills including knowledge of applicable software programs.

Strong leadership skills.

Proven decision-making skills.

Ability to address issues applying analytical and abstract thinking.

Ability to resolve problems and process information quickly.

Ability to coordinate between multiple groups and resolve conflicts efficiently.

Education Requirements

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA 

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or;
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or;
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or;
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or;
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license
