Job Summary

This engineering intern position would provide direct support to the Dominion Energy Field Engineering - West (FE-West) team.  The FE-West team predominantly designs and manages natural gas pipeline facility projects (including the development and enhancement of pipelines and compressor & meter stations) yet also provides ongoing support to Pipeline Operations.

The primary responsibilities of this internship would be supporting FE-West in assessing facility records and analyzing equipment capacities.  Accurate records and assessment of capacities are critical to operation.  As the intern develops the necessary expertise, responsibilities could expand to also include supporting the design and execution of capital projects.


Candidates for this position must have attention to detail in analyzing and documenting systems.   The position requires the ability to work independently on multiple engineering assignments while collaborating with the whole team.


Candidates should be accustomed to verifying their results and producing high quality work within limited time frames.  In addition to performing engineering analyses, assignments require writing reports, preparing presentations, and speaking before peers and management.


Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

This position requires a solid understanding of related engineering principles and the ability to apply academics to real-life problems.  Historically, engineering interns have pursued degrees in chemical, civil, mechanical, or petroleum engineering, but other applicable engineering disciplines may be considered.


The engineering intern candidate should possess:

  • Solid engineering skills commensurate with grade level;
  • An inquisitive nature;
  • The ability to follow written and verbal procedures;
  • Person and professional ethics;
  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
  • Planning, organizing, and project skills;
  • Effective decision making skills;
  • Ability to manage time and coordinate multiple tasks;
  • Basic computer skills and application of software programs;
  • Knowledge of computer languages and code;
  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills;
  • Ability to apply engineering theories and concepts to solve problems in the real world.
Education Requirements
  • Currently be enrolled in a 4 year ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree Engineering program;
    • Prefer Petroleum, Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering programs (Engineering Technology degree programs are not acceptable for Engineering internships at Dominion). 
  • Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Students will need to have completed their sophomore year by Summer 2021
