Job Summary


This position is responsible for assisting in the installation, maintenance, and corrective actions associated with protective relaying schemes, communication systems, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) components, and other Operational Technology (OT) systems deployed in support of Dominion Energy’s Distribution, Transmission, and Power Generation facilities.  Individuals in this position are developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform System Protection tasks.  Individuals will work closely with senior team members to gain protection and control experience during construction projects.  Installation and commissioning assignments may include: Assist in developing a Human Performance work zone strategy; Assist in development installation strategy (panels, wire pull schedules); Assist in testing of various communication mediums (Fiber Optics, RS-232, Coax, etc.); Assist in verifying each protection and control asset can communicate to front end communications equipment; Assist with acceptance testing of all voltage and current sensing devices; Assist with acceptance testing on new yard equipment cabinets, interface enclosures, and control house panels; Assist with functional testing of protective relaying, data communication and control equipment; Assist with the verification of station alarms; Assist with applying Cyber Security controls per Dominion Energy standards; Assist with completion of all compliance paperwork and supporting documentation. Post installation, individuals in this position will assist with maintenance activities as defined by each business area’s maintenance program.  Maintenance of protection systems include various activities developed to address regulatory requirements and system reliability. Individuals in this position will work with department personnel to ensure protection systems are tested within defined maintenance intervals. This position also supports corrective action activities associated with protection and control systems.  Assist as directed, in electromechanical/microprocessor relay repair and troubleshooting activities; Assist as directed, in support of on-site ET organization during Nuclear Outages. Application of Human Performance work zone strategy; Cleaning and inspection of protective relays and other associated protection components; Assist with verifying engineering protective relay setpoints and logic equations; Assist with functional testing of protective relays and associated auxiliaries; Assist in confirming primary equipment operate in accordance with Manufacture design specifications; Assist with applying Cyber Security controls per Dominion Energy standards; Assists with completing of all compliance paperwork and supporting documents. 


This position will specialize in new commissioning, maintenance, and alarm response or troubleshooting activities associated with Digital Monitoring Equipment.


Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience


The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences that are required for entry into this job include the following:


  • 0-2 years directly related experience including, but not limited to, electrical, electro-mechanical, system protection and/or utility scale protection experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)
  • Basic understanding of substation equipment and protection system components found within the substation.
  • Knowledge of: Testing electro-mechanical based relays; Microprocessor-based relay technology, including logic diagrams, variable equations; IEEE device numbers;
  • Skills: Organizational skills;  Good verbal and written communication; Computer knowledge.
  • Abilities: Use of hand-held multimeters; Navigate control drawings, schematics, and equipment nameplates; Recognize electrical hazards; Self-motivated
  •  Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above/below)



Education Requirements

Preferred Associate Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

  • Vocational / technical certificate or degree in an electrical or power discipline is a plus, but not required
  • Preferred Disciplines: Instrumentation Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics,
  • Electrical, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Electromechanical Technology, Electronics Technology
  • Other electrical-focused disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.

Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds. 

Due to after-hours response (call-out), individuals must live approximately 1 hour from designated work location
