Job Summary

Dominion's Power Generation Engineering seeks a senior engineer with a controls and instrumentation background to support the Power Generation fleet (non-nuclear) with technical leadership and hands on SCADA and Industrial Control System (ICS) expertise.  This stimulating position would be responsible for assisting with the designing, implementing, and maintaining ICS systems primarily at Dominion Energy Solar and Battery Storage facilities while occasionally supporting traditional power generation stations. Based at the Thomas F. Farrell II Building, 600 E. Canal Street, Richmond, Virginia, this opportunity provides rewarding, innovative, and vital work in one of the most evolving industries today.
 
The successful candidate will be able to provide the support noted below in accordance with standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements, for the Power Generation fleet and its auxiliaries:

 

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership in control system engineering, design, implementation, programming, configuration, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting in support of utility scale power generation SCADA and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) along with hands on support for all associated control system devices, controllers, computers and account management, communications, control logic interfaces for  inverter operation and solar tracking systems, protection relay and electrical control interfaces, network connections, protocol converters, and endpoint devices. (ICS e.g.: SCADA Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers “PLC”, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Real Time Automation Controllers “SEL RTAC”, Distributed Control Systems “DCS”, etc.).
  • Provide expertise in engineering consultation and recommendation for solution.  To include development of engineering specifications and documentation, work scopes, bid proposals, test procedures, alarm response procedures, commissioning plans, and reports.
  • Manage/Lead projects and perform multiple responsibilities of controls engineering support in parallel and oversee vendor/contract support when needed.
  • Provide support and leadership to meet compliance requirements, code requirements, NERC regulatory requirements, and ICS Cyber Security requirements.
  • Investigate and implement technologies that will improve plant operation and performance (e.g. reliability, efficiency, environmental) and technologies that will assist with control system maintenance and analysis.
  • Perform due diligence for plant acquisition and evaluation of controls specifications for projects and new plant construction.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • 6+ years of professional engineering experience (post-school).
  • At least six years of directly related SCADA and Industrial Control System experience working in the power industry or related heavy industrial applications.
  • Strong Experience with SCADA and Industrial Control Systems to include Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and/or Distributed Control Systems (DCS) system devices, computers, communications, networks, endpoint devices, and instrumentation.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry advances in control system monitoring, testing and analysis of control systems equipment; and controls theory.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of electrical and electronics theory.
  • Strong technical leadership skills and strong verbal/written communication skills.
  • Experience and foundation with Ethernet network switches and with serial digital communications, including third party datalink protocols (Modbus, DNP, etc).
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and assignments concurrently and manage deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to successfully work both independently and in a team environment to identify errors, pinpoint root causes, and devise solutions with minimal oversight.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience

  • Strong knowledge and experience with power plant controls including solar power generation and battery storage.
  • Strong computer skills foundation as relates to operating systems, controls system software, account management, and communications software.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience will determine salary level.

Education Requirements

Education Level: Bachelor of Engineering (see criteria below)

  • Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering is highly preferred (other Bachelor of Engineering disciplines may be substituted for the approved disciplines stated above at discretion of the hiring leader)

 

At least six years of professional engineering experience (post-school) and Required Engineering Criteria: 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
