Solar Project Engineer I

Job Summary

Solar Project Execution – the successful incumbent will provide support to Project Managers and Field Project Engineers in the following areas: reviewing EPC submittals, administering requests for information (RFI), reviewing performance test results and coordinating review with Owners Engineer

 

Relating to the Development of Solar Projects, the incumbent will support a broad team including Generation Construction, Business Development, Legal, Real Estate, Environmental in the following areas: Performance Engineering, Technology evaluation/comparison, Solar Site Layout Planning, Contract Language Development, EPC Bid Analysis including cost evaluations, exclusions and clarifications, and performance comparisons. Additional Solar Project work will include Integration Engineering – facilitating integration of EPC’s SCADA, Telecommunications (ATT, Verizon, CenturyLink), Transmission Provider data collection, and Dominion IT networking equipment (routers, firewalls, etc.)

 

This role will support multiple solar projects concurrently, in varying functional capacities as described above. The ideal candidate will have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and complete them within the established timeframe.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

 

Experience

A 0-2 years of relevant utility construction, EPC experience and multi-discipline engineering coordination is required. Ideal candidates will possess at least 1 year of solar specific experience and be open to temporary assignments anywhere in the US (per diem provided).

Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications. A Masters Degree can count as one year experience. 
 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ideal candidates will possess experience with grid connected ground mounted solar technology including pv modules, tracking/racking systems, inverters, DC & AC cabling systems, SCADA systems, networking, telecommunications and transmission connected solar collector substation technology including main power transformers, mv/hv circuit breakers, switches, CTs, VTs, and associated system protection schemes. Ideal candidates will also possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Solar technology knowledge including utility scale post and rack systems, tracking systems, DC wiring, DC consolidation/protection, DC/AC inverter, inverter step up transformers, plant controller/SCADA systems
  • Solar energy performance engineering experience including PVSyst software, extensive MS Excel, and other statistical software analysis tools for evaluating PV expected performance
  • Project Engineering responsibilities will include multiple project coordination of Dominion’s document management systems, reviewing engineering submittals received from EPC contractors / Engineers, request for information (RFI) process, and engineering support of Dominion’s field execution team.  Fast learning of new technologies and extensive computing skills are necessary to support technology, performance, and project engineering.
Education Requirements

A Bachelors Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and/or current or previously held Professional Engineering license is required. Ideal candidates will possess a Bachelors Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering.

 

Ideal candidates will also possess a Virginia Professional Engineer license and OSHA 30 certification.

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, orPossess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, orPossess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, orPossess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
