Solar Project Development Design Lead (Richmond VA)(Hybrid)

We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Design innovative fixed-tilt and tracking solar arrays from initial conceptual layouts through full civil construction site plans, appropriate for permitting and contractor bidding.

Design Solar PV systems, including array layouts, fence layout, road layout, grading, screening and buffering layout. Layouts to be performed in AutoCAD Civil 3D, PV Case and/or Helios 3D. Oversight of strategic Owners Engineer contracts for design support.

Prepare site layouts which meet and exceed the zoning/entitlement requirements.

Create innovative designs and technologies which add financial, environmental, and social value to the projects.

Attend meetings with internal and external customers to provide engineering support through design, permitting, and construction phases including, but not limited to, reviewing/approving equipment submittals, responding to RFIs, and addressing local jurisdiction comments.

Develop and lead design coordination with internal and external teams responsible for project execution including, but not limited to, partnering consulting engineers, permitting & construction project managers, site superintendents, general foremen, and customer representatives.

Establish basis of design including module selection, string sizing, ground coverage ratio, inverter selection, inverter power factor requirements, inverter loading ratio, and collector cable sizing.

Assess existing site conditions, document key construction risks, and assist in creating construction cost estimates to address those key risks.  Stay current on new technological developments in the field.

Coordinate with design, permitting, construction, and operations groups to refine design solutions in future projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences that are required for entry into this job include the following:

  • 7-8+ years of relevant experience in civil design in the fields of business, public utilities, environmental research, real estate or public service;
  • Use Helios 3D or PV Case software and Excel spreadsheets to calculate  Solar PV system sizes;
  • Understanding of utility PPA and Interconnection requirements preferred;
  • Previous project management of complex projects and leadership skills required;
  • Skilled in the use of a personal computer and related software;
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral are required;
  • Demonstrated skill and ability to influence and interact with others, often external to the organization, to achieve desired results;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a teamed environment, and effectively lead and interact with internal and external staff.

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Bachelor
