We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Dominion's Power Generation Engineering group seeks a Senior or Staff Engineer with balance of plant power station equipment experience, in addition to field support background.

Includes senior to technical expert engineers, able to perform highly difficult and very complex work requiring extensive knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within functional assignment area. Plans and conducts complex work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new and innovative approaches to previously undefined problems encountered and develops innovative and original industry-wide engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards. Possesses and applies advanced engineering knowledge and skills to provide technical expertise, guidance to all levels of engineers and/or team leadership. Possesses and applies advanced knowledge and technical skills to solve complex engineering problems, or to plan and coordinate medium to large scale engineering projects or varied assignments requiring diverse knowledge of engineering principles and practices. Serves as a resource to management on more complex engineering problems and issues. Perform research to find innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions to operational problems within assigned area. Serve as a technical expert on engineering related legal and regulatory issues to outside entities.

 

Additional responsabilities

Will provide the following corporate support to Dominion’s Power Generation (non-nuclear) fleet:

 

•    Strong mechanical engineering background with experience supporting Balance of Plant (BOP) systems in power generation, industrial, or heavy manufacturing environments. 
•    Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software for equipment design, modeling, layout development, and technical drawing creation and review. 
•    Experience with material handling systems, including the design, troubleshooting, operation, and maintenance of: Belt conveyors, drag conveyors, screw conveyors, transfer points, chutes and hoppers, crushers and feeders, Bulk material storage and handling equipment.
•    Knowledge of air-cooled condenser (ACC) systems, including: Fan and blade design/performance, mechanical drive systems, thermal performance optimization, vibration and reliability troubleshooting.
•    Experience analyzing and resolving detailed mechanical issues involving: Gearboxes, motors and drives, couplings,bearings, rotating equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, mechanized material handling equipment
•    Knowledge of heat exchanger systems, including: Evaporators, surface condenser, shell-and-tube heat exchanger, plate and Frame heat exchanger

•    Strong understanding of cooling tower design, operation, and thermal performance, including: Mechanical draft cooling towers, structural and mechanical components, fan systems, water distribution systems, pipe design, thermal performance assessments, capacity and efficiency optimization, HVAC
•    Ability to perform root cause analysis (RCA) and develop engineering solutions to improve equipment reliability and performance. 
•    Familiarity with alignment techniques, lubrication programs, and predictive maintenance technologies and practices. 
•    Experience reviewing vendor designs, specifications, calculations, and equipment proposals. 
•    Working knowledge of applicable industry standards and groups, including Americans Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Air Cooled Condenser Users Group (ACCUG), Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA), Cooling Tower Institute (CTI) and relevant power generation design practices. 
•    Ability to support capital projects from conceptual design through commissioning, including equipment procurement, construction support, and startup activities.
•    Ability to support stations mechanical and performance issues through resolution of the problem and being able to work with necessary vendors, suppliers and other outside engineering resources as required. 
•    Review and develop maintenance strategies for equipment and systems.
•    Provide Station support during Force and Planned Outages. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience that are required for entry into this job include the following:

 

Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience. Prefer experience in technical engineering support experience in the maintenance and operation of balance of plant and mechanical systems.

Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience. Prefer experience in technical engineering support experience in the maintenance and operation of balance of plant and mechanical systems.

  • Extensive knowledge of engineering theories, principles, and practices to a broad variety of assignments and related field.
  • Extensive skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines.
  • Full Knowledge of business/financial and contractual matters.
  • Recognized expert by other engineers and management in assigned area.
  • Provides expert technical advice to other engineers and management in assigned area.
  • Skilled in the use of advanced engineering techniques.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Strong technical and organizational leadership skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g., Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Proven decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

  • Competency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software for equipment design, modeling, layout development, and technical drawing creation.
  • Strong knowledge of PI ProcessBook and the PI System, including the ability to retrieve, validate, and analyze historical plant data to support engineering studies, equipment performance assessments, operational optimization, and root cause investigations.
  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer principles and thermal system performance, including the ability to perform engineering analyses, evaluate heat exchangers, condensers, cooling systems, and other thermal equipment, and develop solutions to optimize efficiency, reliability, and operational performance in power generation applications.
  • Strong knowledge of heat exchanger design, operation, and performance analysis, including evaporators, surface condensers, feedwater heaters, and auxiliary cooling systems, with the ability to evaluate thermal and hydraulic performance, troubleshoot equipment issues, and review vendor designs, calculations, and performance guarantees for power generation applications.
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of Flow Simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), including the ability to develop and interpret fluid flow and heat transfer models, and independently review, validate, and approve vendor-submitted CFD analyses to ensure technical accuracy, design suitability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), including the ability to perform structural and mechanical analyses and independently review, validate, and approve vendor-submitted FEA models, assumptions, loading criteria, and results to ensure technical accuracy, code compliance, and suitability for power generation applications.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:   

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or  
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Expected Hiring Base Salary Range:

 

Sr Engineer: $90900 - $118100 
Staff Engineer: $102300 - $132800
