Public Policy Strategic Advisor

Job Summary

As a Strategic Advisor, this high-level role provides advice to senior executive-level leadership for public policy strategy and initiatives. This role develops and maintains favorable relations with public officials, NGO organizations and business leaders to strengthen Dominion Energy’s external relationships.
 

Primary to this role, the successful candidate conducts comprehensive public policy research and analysis (independently or as part of task teams) using information gathered from legislation/statues, regulatory and/or the public domain to develop strategy and company positions in response to current topics or emerging issues. Directs development of strategy and action plans to address public policy initiatives and activities in support of company objectives.
 

In addition, this role addresses and manages outreach and community presence for public policy and megaproject activity for local and state affairs. Facilitates meetings, outreach and interaction between company senior executives/representatives with policy stakeholders to promote positive relationships and perception. Participates on boards, committees, working groups  and other related stakeholder activities.  Identifies threats and opportunities to improve Dominion Energy’s standing and reputation in the communities we serve. Partners routinely with internal and external stakeholders, operating personnel across the company.
 

Leverages strong writing skills to support executive and senior leader internal and external communications, including the development of public policy position papers and educational or support materials for company objectives and public/media relations.  

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Considerable, related experience, (8+ years), in government relations, public policy, and relationship building. Note:  A Master's degree will count as one year of experience towards the experience requirement.  A partial year of six months or more will be rounded up to one year).  Specific knowledge, skills, abilities and experience include the following:
 

  • Considerable knowledge of major company operations affected by government action.
  • Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge of political process.
  • Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge of local, state, federal government operations, their applications, and supporting theories.
  • Demonstrated capability to conduct comprehensive research and analysis as well as generate summaries or presentations of complex public policy matters. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong, persuasive communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Conflict management and problem resolution skills.
  • Excellent decision-making skills.
  • Conversant in theory, principles, and methods of effective and persuasive speaking, discussion, and debate.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate potential issues, and to develop appropriate and effective strategies that achieve corporate government relationship goals.
  • Ability to create course of action to overcome potential obstacles that may impact Dominion interests.
  • Ability to apply logical thinking principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to lead and direct project teams.
  • Ability to ensure action plans support regional and/or state goals.

Education Requirements

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:  Bachelor
