Job Summary

This role serves as the fleet’s chemistry subject matter expert and technical resource to employees located at power generating plants responsible for the operation of and maintenance of conventional coal fired boilers and combined cycle operating systems. As the subject matter expert (SME), provides expert technical support, direction and guidance in the development of projects and programs related to chemistry & chemical processes across the generation fleet. Applies technical expertise to leadership and staff in the development of programs and projects, monthly and daily tasks, policies and practices to ensure the optimization and safe operation of complex power generating systems and equipment such as TES chiller systems, once-through condensers, cooling towers and air cooled condensers (ACC’s). In addition, serves as the subject matter expert, providing consultative guidance regarding water production to including clarification, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, electronic data interchange (EDI), flue-gas desulfurization (FGD), scrubber chemistry, cycle water chemistry and wastewater treatment. Responsible for maintaining the Chemistry Standard for the Fleet. Independently performs technical evaluations, calculations, and/or analysis to support the Water Chemistry Standard, working independently, or as part of a team, while applying extensive, diversified subject matter knowledge and experience to resolve complex issues. Evaluates and researches current, new, or emerging technologies, through industry experts, professional organizations, conference attendance, user groups, and conferences. Prepares and provides training on related topics to station/Power Generation staff as needed. Maintains knowledge currency through self- study, conferences, user groups, professional organizations, and conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

  • 7+ years of operation and maintenance experience in both conventional coal fired boilers, and combined cycle operations.
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of design and operation of complex equipment such as TES chiller systems, once through condensers, cooling towers, air cooled condensers (ACC’s).
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and has subject matter expertise on water production (including clarification), ion exchange, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, electronic data interchange (EDI), and air co. plant emissions and waste water management, and regulatory requirements governing power generating facilities.
  • 7+ years in Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD)/scrubber chemistry, cycle water chemistry and wastewater treatment.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills, skilled in working with a various levels of station and corporate personnel.
  • Considerable problem solving and decision making skills, demonstrate the ability to process information quickly and make sound decisions in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates excellent project management skills, skilled in applying knowledge and evaluation techniques to develop recommendations or proposed changes.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; skilled in presenting technical issues to all levels of management.
  • Skilled in development and presentation of technical training presentations for station and chemistry personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects or project steps within a broader project, or assume accountability for ongoing activities or objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate technical information and provide guidance to colleagues.
  • Proficient in the use of a personnel computer and use of computer program applications and Microsoft office products.
  • Ability to solve complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions.
  • Ability to develop recommendations to address concerns, and ensure company compliance.
  • Must be able to work independently; receives minimal guidance.
  • Class E, Wastewater Operator’s license is preferred.

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

Bachelor

Preferred Discipline(s): Biology, Chemistry, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology

Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Preferred: Wastewater Treatment Operator

Preferred:  Class E, Wastewater Operator's license
