We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary
There is one position that will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications.
This position will be located at the Thomas Farrell Building (Richmond, Virginia).
- Perform various tasks such as processing bi-weekly, monthly or weekly payrolls, entering payroll data into system database, verifying accuracy of figures and computations and balancing and reconciling accounts.
- Prepare and maintain confidential employee payroll records, files and reports for multi-state pay distribution.
- Manage the payroll control function to include: comparison of wages and explanation of variances, reviewing deduction and earnings wage types to ensure accurate data entry and balancing to journal; and managing differential pay for accidents, military activation and leave of absences.
- Ensure that appropriate time has been entered by managing missing time reports and understanding the different time codes.
- Adhere to departmental standards related to control processes and data entry; electronic retention of control documents for audit purposes; and simulating paychecks and verifying appropriate system/process events.
- Identify and resolve payroll discrepancies and inconsistencies and provide explanations of variations from generally expected results.
- Calculate, process, issue and record adjustments made to pay related to previous errors or retroactive changes.
- Manage the day to day operational components of the payroll process to ensure that applicable laws, regulations and policies are followed while balancing business needs and providing flexibility when needed/appropriate.
- Develop and maintain training materials and job aides for payroll processes.
- Works independently or with limited supervision.
- Provide payroll support and consultation to human resources contacts and employees by having a thorough understanding of the pay policies, union contracts, payroll tools and government regulations.
- Provide customers with complete and accurate responses to payroll related matters in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain confidentiality through actions and protecting human resources and payroll data.
- Support company and department initiatives by participating in development and implementation efforts.
- Participate in special studies, projects and assignments as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Payroll Support Specialist: 3-5 years of directly related experience.
Sr. Payroll Support Specialist: 5+ years of directly related experience.
Handle more complex payroll matters including but not limited to determining the cause of claims, calculating repayment amounts for employees and handling all communications regarding claims; process involuntary deductions such as child and alimony support orders, tax liens, levies and garnishments; and reconciles and balances banking reports for each payroll including off-cycle checks. May provide assistance and training to lower-level incumbents.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience for each role:
- Comprehensive knowledge of company payroll system and procedures.
- Detailed knowledge of company policies, procedures and programs and labor union contracts.
- Advanced knowledge of federal, state and local tax laws and government payroll regulations including federal and state garnishment/lien regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities to improve performance, effectiveness and increase knowledge base.
- Demonstrated ability to perform arithmetic calculations including percentages, fractions, averages or other formulas, compile and array data in a readable and comprehensible manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a high-volume environment and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare specialized and complex payroll worksheets and reports and document procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to execute payroll system procedures independently or with limited supervision and direction.
- Exercises discretion, judgment and tact in the processing of payroll documentation/information of a confidential or sensitive nature.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a diverse community.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Problem solving, analysis and research skills and attention to detail.
- Strong personal computer skills including the ability to use Microsoft Excel to analyze and compare data.

Associate degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.
