Job Summary

This Engineering Intern position located at the Grayland Avenue office in Richmond, Virginia, assists with various duties such as engineering calculations, analysis, research and computer programming.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, may assist with routine assignments designed to develop engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc.  

The Engineering Intern position is associated with the Electric Transmission organization providing technical expertise in all areas related to transmission & distribution operations & maintenance.  The position provides support of the Electric Transmission and Power Delivery group with focus on the functions associated with substation Protection Systems.  Other key areas include performing analysis and apparent cause investigations of grid disturbances and substation equipment automatic outages. The position also includes support activities associated with Dominion Energy Power Stations and Electric Distribution circuits.  

  • Help to ensure fault and transient recorders are specified, maintained and operational.
  • Assist with setup and commissioning of fault recording and monitoring equipment.
  • Support field System Protection personnel with protective relay failure and operational analysis.
  • Assist with routine reviews of grid monitoring equipment settings and operations.
  • Work with transmission training and methods support personnel.
  • Collaborate with team members to enhance automation of data retrieval and data analytics.
  • Assist System Protection, Electrical Equipment, and Substations personnel with data requests and engineering support.
  • Support safety and human performance initiatives.
  • Provide fault location analysis to Electric Transmission line maintenance group.
  • Perform various other duties as required to include various work locations.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Basic knowledge of Electrical Engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory.
  • Must have great oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent Computer skills with all Microsoft Office products
  • Experience in programming languages and databases strongly preferred.
  • Analytical skills

Education Requirements

  • Candidates must have an anticipated graduation date between spring 2020 and spring 2021. (2021 preferred).
  • Candidates must hold a minimum GPA of 2.5  (3.0 GPA strongly preferred)
  • Must be pursuing a 4-year ABET accredited Bachelor degree in Engineering 
    • Preference on Electrical disciplines such as Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering
