Job Summary

The summer intern will support implementation and continuous improvement of Dominion Energy’s operational planning platform by assisting with integration analysis, business process documentation, workflow evaluation, and data quality initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience with in electric utility operations and distribution system planning using data-driven tools to improve distribution grid visibility, reliability, and operational decision-making. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop an understanding of the reliability analysis platform and its integration with, DERMS and related systems 
  • Assist in documenting system interfaces, data flows and business processes supporting the platform implementation 
  • Review existing workflows and identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization 
  • Validate incoming data and perform data quality checks to ensure consistency and accuracy 
  • Investigate data anomalies and work with engineering, IT and business stakeholders to resolve issues 
  • Assist in developing report and dashboards to track integration and data quality metrics 
  • Participate in testing functionalities, integrations and system enhancements. 
  • Assist in user acceptance testing (UAT), issue tracking and documentation of test results 
  • Present findings and recommendations to the project team throughout the tenure of the internship 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering or a related field. 
  • Interest in electric utility operations, smart grid technologies, DER integration or power systems 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Familiarity with data analytics tools; experience in SQL, Python or Power BI is a plus 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The position requires a solid understanding of related engineering principles and the ability to apply academic knowledge to real-life scenarios.

  • An inquisitive nature and curiosity
  • Ability to follow written and verbal procedures
  • Strong professional ethics
  • Oral and written communication skills, including technical writing
  • Planning, organizing, and project management skills
  • Effective decision-making skills
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in software programs
  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills
  • Ability to apply engineering theories and concepts to industrial problems

Education Requirements

  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering or a related field. 
  • Must have completed their freshmen year with a cumulative GPA above 2.5 at an ABET-accredited university.
  • Prefer rising sophomores and juniors with an anticipated graduation date between May 2028 or later.

 

A valid driver's license is required.

Hourly Rate:

 

$25.00 - $37.00

 

The hourly rate listed is the rate we anticipate paying for this position. If a range is listed, the actual hourly rate offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate's academic major and/or school classification (e.g., sophomore, junior, senior).
