Job Summary
Provides work direction and guidance to incumbents responsible for short-term purchase and sales transactions in an effort to minimize cost and maximize economic value of associated portfolios. Interacts with market participants to evaluate, develop, negotiate and execute business opportunities. Applies electric market operations, trading, and knowledge of renewables to capture market opportunities and mitigate portfolio risks.
Analyzes and reacts to current market and competitive conditions. Analyzes and evaluates energy transactions to ensure counter party and contractual terms are favorable and consistent with company guidelines for risk management. Interfaces with Regional Transmission Organizations (RTO) and generating plants to facilitate the operation of generating units for economic and reliability considerations. Tracks and enters all transactions into appropriate business and RTO systems by required deadlines.
Understands and applies basic knowledge of generation assets and dispatch operations as they pertain to the rules of the ISO's, NERC, and FERC. Serves as a team leader and assists management to ensure that profit margins are met or exceeded. Directs activities and provides leadership direction to Hourly Traders.
May also perform the following duties:
- Provide compliance support to Merchant Power Group within all regulatory areas (NERC, PJM, FERC, etc). These activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- ISO/RTO Certification requirements
- Ensure internal process documents comply with applicable NERC reliability standards and PJM Tariff and manual requirements
- Responses to required surveys related to the generation fleet (e.g. PJM).
- Assist in coordinating activities related to market operations center functions and commercial responsibilities including the management and oversight of training requirements for Hourly Traders. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Certification of generation assets in PJM Energy Markets, Identification & evaluation of discrepancies between EMS and PJM settlement volumes
- Taking necessary actions to resolve discrepancies
- Facilitate the Integration of new generation or other assets into the PJM market which require dispatch/interfacing with the ISO
- Coordinate with Generation IT staff on EMS upgrades and identify modifications that support MOC needs
- Development of procedural and training materials to facilitate necessary training programs to meet all regulatory compliance standards, as well as corporate and Power Generation standards
- Facilitate one-on-one and group training activities to ensure Hourly Desk Trading personnel maintains the necessary training hour requirements imposed by regulatory bodies
- Facilitate and lead efforts to maintain required standards and operating requirements of the emergency market operations center (EMOC)
- Support any and all other training and certification requirements for personnel that is deemed necessary within the Merchant Power area. Perform other duties as requested or assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:
At least 7 years of related experience is required (finance, accounting or electric / renewable trading) *Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A master’s degree can count as one year experience.
- Extensive working knowledge and experience with generating plant characteristics, regional transmission organization market concepts and process requirements as well as the fundamental mechanics of electricity and transmission grid operations
- Trading/Hedging experience in energy commodities or financial instruments is a plus
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts (including nights, weekends and holidays)
- Must possess the ability to direct work and provide guidance to less experienced hourly traders as well as train, direct and organize the activities of those incumbents
- Must possess or be able to pass RTO certification to dispatch generation and perform the functions of operations center personnel.
NOTE: Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above
