Fire Protection Engineer II or III

Job Summary

There is one position available that will be filled at either the Engineer II or Engineer III level commensurate with the selected candidate's skills and abilities.
 

Fire Protection Engineer II
 

This role is fully competent in all conventional aspects of Fire Protection Engineering.  Second level position in the fire protection engineering series provides engineering support and property loss prevention consulting at operating and under construction power generation facilities, natural gas extraction plants, natural gas pipeline facilities, LNG import/export terminal, commercial facilities and office buildings.   The position will perform and/or review engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.  The position will also provide cost analysis as needed and develop recommendations based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade) for management review.  The position is distinguished from Engineer I by increased complexity in application of engineering the skills required.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, the individual will exercise independence in evaluating, selecting and applying loss control and fire protection standards or well defined fire protection engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.  Independent judgment will be used in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications.   The application of fire protection engineering principles, industry standards and other guidance to develop risk reduction solutions is critical to this role.
 

Fire Protection Engineer III
 

This role is the senior level in providing fire protection engineering support and property loss prevention consulting at operating and under construction power generation facilities, natural gas extraction plants, natural gas pipeline facilities, LNG import/export terminal, commercial facilities and office buildings.  The position will be able to perform the most difficult and complex fire protection engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.   Plans and conducts work requiring judgment and independence in evaluating, selecting and applying complex fire protection engineering standards, industry standards and other guidance to develop risk reduction solutions.  Able to prioritize and make complex adaptations and modifications.
 

There is one position available that will be filled at the level commensurate with the selected candidate's skills and abilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

At the time of application, candidates must indicate the level which they want to be considered (Fire Protection Engineer II, Fire Protection Engineer III, both levels)
 

The qualifications for each level are listed below.
 

Fire Protection Engineer II:

    Considerable knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory
    3+ years of related engineering experience, preferably in fire protection or mechanical engineering
    Ability to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems
    Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
    Effective decision making skills
    Computer skills and application of software program
    Analytical and abstract thinking skills
    Problem solving skills
    Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills
    Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks
    Ability to work within a team environment
    Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices for other team members
 
Fire Protection Engineer III:

    Extensive knowledge of  and demonstrated application of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory
    5+ years in engineering, preferably fire protection or mechanical engineering
    Ability to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems, and subdivide work for more junior engineers
    Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
    Effective decision making skills
    Computer skills and application of software programs
    Analytical and abstract thinking skills
    Problem solving skills
    Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills
    Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks
    Ability to work within a team environment
    Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices for other team members and turn these into work plans
    Demonstrated project management or team lead experience

Note:  This position requires up to 50% travel.  Some overnight travel will be involved.

Education Requirements

Education Level: Required: Bachelor

Disciplines: Required: Engineering
 

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

    1) Possess a 4-year fire protection or a related engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET OR:
    2) Possess a 4-year fire protection or related engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved OR;
    3) Possess a 4-year fire protection or related engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET OR;
    4) Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET OR;
    5) Holds or has previously held a valid Professional Engineer license (preferably in Fire Protection Engineering).
