Job Summary

This position will be filled as an Engineer or Senior Engineer based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Complexity of assignments, expectations, and responsibilities increase based on level.

 

This role provides Electric Distribution Engineering support for the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including but not limited to DER Interconnection Feasibility Studies, Direct Transfer Trip (DTT) alternatives, Energy Storage Systems and modernizing deployed technologies within the Dominion Energy service territory. The position supports projects from conceptual development through commissioning, with a strong emphasis on control systems, communication networks, and Operational and Informational Technology (OT and IT) that enable safe, reliable, and controllable DER asset operation.

 

Engineers in this role perform work that ranges from moderately complex to highly complex, requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter, sound engineering judgment, and increasing levels of independence. The candidate will interface with various internal Dominion project teams and will provide technical leadership and serve as a subject matter expert (SME) supporting internal stakeholders, customers, and external entities.

Key Responsibilities

DER Automation, Control, Network and Systems Engineering

  • Design, evaluate, and support end-to-end control system communication architecture for DER telemetry and operational control‑.
  • Define requirements for DER monitoring, control, and asset management, ensuring visibility of network health and device dispatchability.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in inverter-based‑ resources, control strategies, and integration using DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, IEEE 2030.5, and other communication protocols.
  • Control system hardware design.
  • Support the design and execution of a Distribution-owned lab with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing for DER control equipment and communication gateways prior to field deployment.
  • Validate interoperability between field-deployed DER control systems, protection relays, and SCADA systems (ADMS/DERMS).

Microgrid Automation System Development, Field Support & Commissioning

  • Design and develop control system platforms for Microgrids.  
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.
  • Serve as a SME for technical troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and remediation of performance and operational ‑issues.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Engineer: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • PLC and control hardware programming experience.
  • Experience with Human Machine Interface (HMI) graphic control platforms.
  • Knowledge of industry standard network communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC61850 GOOSE/MMS).
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (including technical writing).
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to design, comprehend, and develop complex technical systems.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge working with inverter-based systems and specific knowledge on controlling inverter-based resources using SEL-RTACs.
  • Prior work experience in an electric utility.
  • Knowledge of energy storage systems, electric power distribution equipment, system protection systems, and electric/electronic instrumentation.
  • Prior work experience working on microgrid projects.
  • Experience with SEL AcSELerator Platform (RTAC, Quickset, Diagram Builder, Architect).
  • Ability to break down complex engineering concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of Electric Generation, Electric Transmission, and Electric Distribution grid operations.

Education Requirements

Requirements for both Engineer and Senior level: (Equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):

Required: Bachelor's degree

Preferred:  Master’s degree
Demonstrated related or equivalent experience may be substituted for preferred education.
 
Disciplines Preferred:
Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Control Systems, or a related field.

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:  For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:  Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or   Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or   Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or   Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
