Job Summary

This position will be filled at either the Engineer II or Engineer III level, commensurate with the successful candidates experience, skills, and abilities. 


Engineer II: 

Dominion’s Electric Transmission (ET) System Protection Engineering department is seeking a motivated Engineer to support the Company’s evolving transmission grid.  The primary responsibilities for this role include the design and development of programming and automation tools.  These tools will support the development of protective relay settings for ET capital projects and the advancement of system protection applications and technology in the areas of smart grids and inverter-based interconnections. The role will also include architecting, developing, and maintaining engineering tools and automation for streamlining business processes within engineering teams. A strong focus on end-user/customer engagement and support within Power Delivery is critical to successful execution of the job function. 


Engineer III: 

This role is the top progression level position in the engineer series and requires an individual who can apply a diversified knowledge of engineering principles and experience to major projects that have a significant impact to the system.  The incumbent will be expected to provide technical expertise and team leadership as needed and will need to be comfortable working independently and in a team-oriented environment. 


Job Responsibilities – Engineer II: 

  • Develop and maintain various automation tools for the group with the use of computer programming.  
  • Develop protective relay settings for Electric Transmission protection schemes inside the substation. 
  • Provide technical assistance to various engineering and field teams to fully develop the protection and control design package.  
  • Provide technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects.  
  • Perform other duties, as requested or assigned.

  • Provide expert technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects. 
  • Participate in various company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance Electric Transmission’s system protection performance. 
  • Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities. 
  • Support team with compliance and/or setting peer review activities. 
  • Perform other duties, as requested or assigned. 

Must be able to meet NERC qualifications.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Basic Qualifications:

  • Engineer II: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience (with required engineering educational requirements)
  • Engineer III: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience (with required engineering educational requirements)

*Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications*

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • High degree of proficiency in Python, C#/.NET, and SQL or comparable technologies.  
  • Experience developing large scale software systems and tools. 
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing. 
  • Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment. 
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems. 
  • Experience with short circuit modeling software is a plus. 
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection is a plus.  
  • Experience with PSCAD and/or RTDS is a plus. 
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices. 

Engineer II:

  • Understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems. 
  • Understanding of the principles of transmission and/or distribution relay protection preferred. 
  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above.

Engineer III:

  • Comprehensive understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems. 
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of transmission and distribution relay protection preferred. 
  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above.

Education Level Required: Bachelor's degree in Engineering

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 

 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 
 

1. Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, OR

2. Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, OR

3. Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, OR
 

4. Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, OR
 

5. Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
