Job Summary

Dominion Energy’s ET System Protection Engineering department is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineer to support the Company’s evolving transmission and distribution grids.  The primary responsibilities for this role include the design and development of protective relay settings for ET capital projects and the advancement of system protection applications and technology in the areas of smart grids and inverter-based interconnections. This role is the top progression level position in the engineer series and requires an individual who can apply a diversified knowledge of engineering principles and experience to major projects that have a significant impact to the system.  The incumbent will be expected to provide technical expertise and team leadership as needed and will need to be comfortable working in a team-oriented environment.


•Develop protective relay settings for Electric Transmission protection schemes including: transmission line protection, transformer protection, bus protection, breaker protection, capacitor bank protection, etc.
•Provide technical assistance to various engineering and field teams to fully develop the protection and control design package.
•Provide expert technical support to project management teams and conceptual engineering teams throughout the course of capital projects.
•Participate in various company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance Electric Transmission’s system protection performance.
•Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
•Perform other duties, as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Candidate should have strong electrical engineering background; preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.  Candidate should possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices that will enable the successful candidate to progress in either an engineering career series.

  • 5+ years related engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree (Please see criteria below to be considered for an engineering role; Advanced/graduate engineering degrees may be considered in calculation of years of directly related experience).


Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications. A Masters Degree can count as one year experience. 


  • Comprehensive understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including an understanding of three-phase power systems
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of transmission and distribution relay protection preferred
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing
  • Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment
  • Experience with short circuit modeling software (ASPEN or CAPE) preferred
  • Experience with PSCAD and/or RTDS is a plus
  • Experience with SAP work management systems preferred
  • Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, etc.) is a plus
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection preferred
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.



For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:


  1. Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  2. Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  3. Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  4. Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  5. Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
