Engineer III - Distribution Grid Planning Modeling and Analysis

Job Summary

Engineer III, in Electric Distribution Grid Planning, as a member of the Modeling and Analysis team.  The candidate will be part of a team that provides technical support of Electric Distribution Grid  Planning’s involvement in Integrated Resource Planning.  This position is specifically responsible for supporting advanced system studies, analyses, and modeling

 

Candidate should have strong electrical engineering background with a concentration in electric power systems engineering.  Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power engineering background.  Candidate should possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices that will enable the successful candidate to progress in an engineering career series.


Job activities: 
•    Power system modeling: transient oscillations, load flow, transient dynamic and electromagnetic simulations, and real time digital simulations.
•    Analyze multiple infrastructure interdependencies.
•    Maintain and manage equipment data for distribution system assets. 
•    Perform/support evaluation, design, engineering, and support activities related to traditional utility solutions and a range of non-wires alternatives.
•    Model equipment and systems as necessary using engineering software
•    Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Required: 5 years relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

•    Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles
•    Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
•    Proficient in analyzing all aspects of three-phase AC power flow
•    Strong knowledge of substation equipment/operations, relay operations, and distributed energy resources preferred.
•    Expertise in power system modeling software: Synergi Electric, PSS/E, PSCAD, ASPEN, MATLAB, Open DSS.
•    Demonstrated resourcefulness in developing system models from diverse and indirect data and information sources preferred.
•    Relational database proficiency preferred.
•    Programming skills for automation of system studies preferred (e.g., Python, C#, SQL, Visual Basic, etc.).
•    Planning, organizational and project management skills
•    Must possess good communication skills, written and oral
•    Must be dedicated to continuous improvement and identifying best practice opportunities
•    Must be able to work well independently as well as in team environment

Education Requirements

Engineering Bachelor degree required. 

Prefer Electrical Engineering, but will consider other disciplines

 

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
