Job Summary

 

This position provides engineering operations support for the dSCADA, ADMS, NMS, and other Operations Technology (OT) applications used by the Electric Distribution Operations Centers, including Power Flow, Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR), Volt-VAR, and other control programs. This role performs analysis to validate the inputs and program logic needed to maintain a real-time operational model of the distribution system.  This role performs engineering calculations, analysis, design, research, and strategy based on the level of competency.  With demonstrated proficiency, this role may take on after-hours OnCall support workflows in rotation with other EDTA or ROC engineers.

 


Engineer I – Entry and/or developmental

Under direction of supervisor or work leader, this role performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.

Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

  • performs assignments designed to develop work knowledge, skills and abilities requiring application of policies, procedures, techniques and other criteria in carrying out all aspects of the job
  • performs routine work assignments but over time will demonstrate the ability to perform more difficult work assignments
  • works under established policies and procedures to meet set schedules and system or program requirements
  • continues to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to reach a higher level of proficiency and work complexity


Engineer II – Career proficiency

This role is fully competent in all conventional aspects of the operational support of the Ops Center OT systems and business processes.  Performs and/or reviews engineering calculations, analysis, research and design. Provides cost analysis as needed and develops recommendation based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade) for management review.  Distinguished from Engineer I by increased complexity in application of engineering skills required.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, exercises independence in evaluating, selecting and applying standard or well defined engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.  Uses independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications.  Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require investigation of a limited number of variables.

  • proficiently performs assignments having the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience needed to carry out all aspects of the job
  • exercises independent judgment and decision-making in planning, organizing and conducting work assignments
  • may receive instructions and guidance on unusual or complex problems and knows when to get others involved
  • effectively utilizes the proper resources to develop solutions and devise new approaches to problems encountered in work assignments
  • identifies and eliminates unnecessary work and non-value added activities

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Engineer 1 – Entry and/or developmental

The knowledge, skills, abilities and education required for entry into this job include the following:

  • 0-2+ years of engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of basic electric power concepts, including electric transmission and distribution, power flow, distributed generation and line protection
  • Familiarity or ability to learn core electric distribution programs, including ADMS, GIS, Outage Management, Work Manager and modeling software
  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory.
  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Effective decision making skills.
  • Computer skills and application of software programs.
  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills.
  • Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.


Engineer II – Career proficiency

Meets Engineer 1 KSAs and:

  • 3+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
  • Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
  • Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
  • Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
  • Effective decision-making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

 

*(Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

Education Requirements

 

Required: Engineering degree or Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license (see below) 

 

**This role is considering upcoming graduates no later than August 31st, 2024. 

 

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country’s own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country’s accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
