Engineer I, II, III - Long Term or Strategic Ops Study Engineer (Hybrid)

We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

 

These positions will be filled as an Engineer I, II, or III based on the successful candidate's qualifications.


 
The successful candidates will join the Long-Term Operations Planning team (focused on current time to 1 year in future) or the Strategic Operations Planning team (focused on 1-5 years in future) within the System Operations Center and help achieve Dominion's long-term and strategic plan by analyzing the transmission system over the upcoming current to 5 year timeframe. The transmission system is rapidly changing due to construction, renewable power source integration, increased electrification and data center growth. To keep up with these changes, Dominion Energy will use load-flow modeling that can incorporate load growth forecasts, planned system topology changes and needed construction timelines to ensure the system continues to remain n-1 secure during peak load and outage seasons.

The successful candidate will perform power-flow analysis on overall system operation and work with Dominion Energy's Transmission Planning, Project Management and Operations departments along with PJM to confirm planned capacity growth keeps up with forecasted load growth and provide recommended adjustments to construction and outage plans as needed to maintain n-1 security. 

This position follows Dominion’s hybrid office/home work guidelines, and offers opportunities for occasional project field visits as well as participation in relevant industry-related events to enhance skills and knowledge.  

The key responsibilities for this position are:
 
•    Perform, review and analyze detailed reliability, power flow and stability studies on the Electric Transmission (ET) System to minimize risk and maintain system Reliability
•    Sequence and coordinate long-term (planned) Electric Transmission (ET) equipment outages by undertaking a thorough review of requested outages to understand scope-of-work, clearances requested, switching required, and potential impact to the grid
•    Work with ET Project Managers to effectively sequence outage requests and mitigate conflicts or concerns
•    Coordinate and work with PJM personnel to coordinate, identify, explain and mitigate concerns with outage plans
•    Develop, implement and maintain processes for transmission outage ticketing, both internally and externally
•    Provide engineering support, expertise and leadership to fellow team members
 
The normal work schedule for this position is FLEX 9’s.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

Engineer I - 0-2 years relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)



Engineer II - 3+ years relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)



Engineer III - 5+ years relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

 

  • This position highly prefers engineering experience appropriate with title level within electrical transmission, distribution and/or generating stations (prefer experience within an operations or system protection group).
  • Power systems background preferred
  • Full Knowledge of electrical theories and principles
  • Good Knowledge of substation equipment/operations, relay operations, and power station operations
  • Good Knowledge of field construction, switching and equipment
  • Strong Leadership skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (specifically technical, procedures documentation)
  • Strong computer skills

Education Requirements

Required: A Degree in Engineering that meets the criteria below (Or have holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.) 

 

Discipline Preferred: Electrical Engineering

 

Upcoming engineering graduates with a projected graduation date of no later than May 31, 2024, who also meet the engineering criteria will be considered.

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 
 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

 

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
