Job Summary
Dominion Energy Virginia's Electric Transmission (ET) System Operations Center (SOC) Operations Department is seeking a motivated Engineer or Engineering Technical Specialist to support the Company's evolving Transmission grid. In this role, you will be responsible for creating automated tools to enhance shift operations and improve efficiencies. This role requires a power systems engineering background with advanced computer programming skills and the ability to access and manipulate databases where operational process data is stored. The successful candidate should have an interest in power system operations and data analytics. You will work collaboratively within the Operations Department to advance and streamline tools contributing to the overall success of the team.
In this position, you will also play a crucial role in supporting System Operations staff by assisting with operating guidance for protection schemes, FACTs devices, and operational policies and procedures. You will provide guidance and support to ensure the smooth operation of our infrastructure on the Dominion Energy BES. You should have an interest and strong understanding of system protection fundamentals and will work with the Operations team and other Departments within the Electric Transmission organization to address and resolve inquiries related to real-time shift operations. This role requires a strong technical background and excellent problem-solving skills to ensure the reliability and efficiency of our operations. You will also assist with integrating synchro phasors into real-time system operations by working with Dominion Energy's Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) to identify new operational practices, policies, and procedures.
This role can be filled from the entry-level up to the senior level within the job series, based on education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
- Associate Engineer: 0-2+ years of engineering experience
- Engineer: 2+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Technical Specialist I: 0-2+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Technical Specialist II: 2+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Technical Specialist III: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
Required:
- Understanding of Power System Generation, Operations, and Control.
- Deep understanding of AC and DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems.
- Understanding of the principles of transmission relay protection.
- Programming experience in Python, C++, Java, or C#.
- Experience using PSSE for power system model building and power flow analysis.
- Experience using the PSSE API.
- Knowledge of inverter-based systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of electric power distribution equipment, system protection systems, and electric/electronic instrumentation.
- Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
- Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.
- Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles.
- Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
- Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
- Proven decision-making skills.
- Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
Preferred:
- Prior work experience in an electric utility power plant.
- Prior work experience working in a Transmission System Operating Center.
- Experience using TARA for Power Flow and N-1 Contingency analysis.
- Ability to breakdown complex engineering concepts for mass consumption.
- Experience and knowledge of Electric Power Plant, Electric Transmission, and Electric Distribution grid operations.
Education Requirements
For Engineer Titles: Candidates must meet one of the following criteria.
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Hold or have previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
For Engineering Technical Specialist Titles: Candidates must meet one of the following criteria.
- Possess a 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited), or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering, or other technical related discipline, or
- Possess a 4-year non-technical degree and a post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited), or
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the preferred degree.
