Job Summary
If you’re looking to model the electric distribution systems powering the world’s data center capital, then we’re looking for you! The Distribution DataCenter Planning team is hiring for a motivated engineer to join our team and lead the effort in steady-state, phasor-domain dynamic, and electromagnetic (EMT) modeling of data centers on our distribution system. This position will be responsible for building, maintaining, and analyzing digital models of electric utility systems that serve data centers in Dominion Energy’s service territory. This position is essential for ensuring electrical reliability, supporting future growth, and delivering accurate models that will help guide critical grid decisions. Additionally, this engineer will support the datacenter connection process from the initial Delivery Point Request (DPR) phase up to Conceptual Phase Request (CPR)/Approval for Expenditure (AFE) phases, as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and refine steady-state, phasor-domain dynamic, and electromagnetic (EMT) models of data center electric utility systems, including grid connections, backup generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS’s), batteries, transformers, and distribution networks.
- Simulate varying electrical load scenarios, grid failures, and redundancy strategies to assess risk and ensure robust power reliability.
- Work closely with data center customers to understand their performance capabilities and expectations both at the time of interconnection requests and as customers integrate new equipment as technology develops.
- Provide scenario analysis to forecast the impact of site expansions, new technologies, or changes in grid reliability on power system performance and power quality.
- Perform analysis to understand the impact of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and/or Distribution-level Flexible AC Transmission devices (FACTs) on circuits with data center load. Perform data analytics to compare real-time data captured from field events with models to validate their performance.
- Collaborate with our internal Electric Transmission team, external utility companies, engineering, and facilities teams to gather requirements, validate model data, and support electrical infrastructure planning.
- Monitor industry trends, evolving regulations, and advancements in energy modeling software and grid technologies.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and dashboards to communicate findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support due diligence for new site selection for bridging power and utility negotiations by modeling grid capacity and dynamic behavior.
- This position may require occasional site visits to ensure model accuracy.
- This position involves regular interaction with engineering, operations, utility providers, data center customers, and management teams.
- Support the data center connection process from the DPR phase up to CPR/AFE phases, as needed.
- Support storm restoration as a Night Packager, reviewing unassigned outage and non‑outage jobs, grouping and prioritizing work, and assigning packages to field crews, patrollers, or ghost crews for the next day. Responsibilities include confirming crew availability, updating restoration details, adjusting assignments as needed, and communicating packaging plans to managers and leads while using OMS, TRSi, GIS, and Crew Manager to efficiently organize and dispatch work overnight.
Sponosrship and Relocation Assistance will be available to the successful candidate if necessary.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Power Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in electric utility modeling, power system analysis, or electrical engineering for critical infrastructure.
- Proficiency with electric distribution and/or power system modeling and simulation tools (e.g., Synergi, ETAP, PSCAD, PSS®E, or similar).
- Experience with power electronics is a plus.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret electrical data and distill complex scenarios into actionable insights.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, especially when working with multidisciplinary teams and external utility partners.
- Familiarity with data center design standards and electrical reliability frameworks (e.g., Uptime Institute, IEEE, NERC) is a plus.
- Keen attention to detail
- Capacity to manage multiple projects and shift priorities in a rapidly evolving environment.
- Commitment to continuous learning, staying current on smart grid and energy innovation.
