Customer Energy Solutions Business Development Manager

Job Summary

The base work location for this position is flexible, but must be initially based in Virginia.

In this role, you will be directly involved on a new team with a goal of energy product and service business to Commercial &Industrial (C&I) customers, Municipals, and Cooperatives. This team is responsible for complex solution sales, product development and opening up new markets and verticals. Today, we primarily focus on utility privatization and utility energy service contracting but our mandate is to continuously evaluate new business models and new technologies for growth.  Think of us as a start-up inside an established, well-capitalized, market leader.

Successful candidates will be active listeners and excellent communicators who can understand their audience, ask great questions and distill complex and new information into a compelling value proposition. You will need to be able to work independently, proactively, and resourcefully to prospect, identify, and qualify relevant customer opportunities and successfully negotiate deals.

Candidates with previous experience selling to C&I customers and/or Municipals are preferred. Candidates with micro grid experience, and experience with DG-sized natural gas or diesel generators, Solar, CHPs, fuel cells, storage, or backup power, are highly preferred.

Job Overview

Employees in this role develop and execute plans for new energy related products and/or services. This job is responsible for resource allocation, schedules, cost and technical adequacy, ensuring the project or transaction is completed in the most cost effective and competitive manner.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

•    Manages all aspects of the day to day transaction process to ensure timely completion as well as a cost effective and competitive results
•    Leads and coordinates key functions such as financial feasibility analyses, engineering/design, project legal review, permitting activities and/or financial negotiations
•    Coordinates evaluation, analysis, RFP responses, negotiations, and due diligence activities
•    Coordinates due diligence activities with other internal groups to ensure proper analysis and structuring of assigned projects
•    Acts as liaison between internal and external specialists regarding procurement, contracting, permitting, and interconnection
•    Constructs contractual arrangements for project development
•    Develops strategy for expansion of Customer Energy Solutions business
•    Negotiates agreements with consultants, subcontractors, and partners
•    Ensures compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements
•    Fosters external relationships with customers, 3rd parties and/or members of the community
•    Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

• 8+ years of related business development experience is required. (Note: A Master's degree can count towards one year of experience).
• Knowledge of electric power distribution business acquired through related work experience
• Familiarity with contracting, competitive evaluations, project identification and development, risk analyses, environmental evaluations, and the development of teaming agreements
• Demonstrated project management of highly complex projects
• Demonstrated ability to manage and implement work plans with available resources
• Demonstrated project management of contracts with significant business and financial impact
• Ability to represent the Company in public forums
• Demonstrated team building skills
• Demonstrated consultative sales and negotiating skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to manage changing and emerging priorities
• Ability to analyze and identify business development opportunities
• Knowledge of company policies and procedures
• Excellent financial analysis skills including demonstrated ability to monitor expenditures and to implement cost controls
• Proven leadership skills
• Effective interpersonal, organizational and project management skills
• Proven analytical skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong computer skills

Note: Please note this position will require up to 50% travel.

Education Requirements

Education Level: Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Bachelor or Master
