Assistant Project Manager - Distributed Solar

Job Summary

The Solar Project Leader works cross-functionally with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders, assisting the Project Manager in their duties as well as facilitating the team Project Engineers in their duties; this role bridges responsibilities between the Project Manager and Project Engineering.  The Project Leader supports new distributed-scale solar projects (between 1-3MW), largely in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The majority of the distributed-scale projects are ground-mounted.  The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, comfortable wearing many hats, manage multiple projects concurrently, and work effectively in a highly collaborative environment. Looking for individuals who are talented and highly regarded within the industry, detail-oriented, organized, and have demonstrated the ability to work back from core customer needs.  Solar Project Leaders are experienced and comfortable working with developers, engineers, local officials, real estate professionals, contractors and other external team members from initial site review through EPC contract negotiation and construction.


  • Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders/partners to overcome obstacles and deliver results
  • Lead a collaborative diligence, design, permitting, and construction process for multiple new distributed-scale solar projects
  • Evaluate site feasibility including locality requirements, site constraints, and environmental regulatory requirements
  • Manage resources to ensure prompt information transfer and contract adherence
  • Provide detailed oversight and support of contractors and coordinate technical review of contractor-supplied deliverables
  • Support coordination between project teams, including construction, engineering, real estate, environmental, and project management, etc. 
  • Monitor and support state and local permitting and regulatory processes
  • Establish, maintain, and update project-specific files, databases, records, and other documents
  • Provide engineering support for designated solar projects.  
  • This position serves as the primary interface between EPC contractor’s Engineer-of-Record, Dominion (internal) Engineering staff and the Owner’s Engineer, tracking the comment/review cycle for all RFI’s, Transmittals, Submittals, etc. throughout the course of the Project
  • Candidate will be required to review all EPC project correspondence, including daily/weekly/monthly report content and structure, to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Candidate will develop and manage a project Action Item list from diligence through Final Acceptance.  
  • Assist Project Manager with proposal preparation/evaluation, requisition requests, and financial tracking/reporting
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):

  • 5-10 years related experience in project engineering and assisting in project management duties associated with capital construction projects; and solar project experience
  • Strongly Prefer: experience coordinating or leading engineering teams, experience with EPC construction projects, experience with PV solar projects
  • Prefer Candidates who have held related titles such as Associate Project Manager, Project Coordinator, Project Leader
  • Have strong multi-tasking skills
  • Experienced with Adobe Professional, Bluebeam, Word, Powerpoint, and Excel
  • Knowledge of engineering practices in support of all solar systems
  • Knowledge of project management duties including contract preparation, review, negotiation, organizing information for reports, presentation preparation, etc. for projects that include engineering, permitting, equipment procurement, construction, commissioning, and turnover to operations (collectively called EPC Projects).
  • Strong organizational skills are a must, with the ability to prioritize a large task load in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated, able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Ability to work with technical and non-technical business owners to overcome obstacles and deliver results
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to solve complex problems with full transparency and adequate documentation
  • Must be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined.

Preferred Education Level: Bachelor in Engineering 


Other Education: Business, Engineering Technology, Construction Management


Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.
