Engineering Technical Consultant - High Voltage Testing (On-site)

Job Summary

 

Responsibilities for the role may include:


•    Perform work under the guidance and direction of the Manager - High Voltage Testing or Consulting Engineer. 
•    Assist in overseeing all activities taking place in the HVL. 
•    Participate in setting the test circuits. 
•    Assist in development of test plans, procedures, and test schedules.
•    Learn the software to operate all test systems.
•    Verify the electrical connections made by technical staff.
•    Made contributions to the improvements in the HVL operation.
•    Be mindful about requirements for complying with all relevant federal and state regulations, as well as all required Dominion Energy work safety policies and guidelines.
•    On request, help in the process of achieving ISO 17025 accreditation for the laboratory. 
•    Help in developing calibrations and preventive maintenance programs for the laboratory test equipment, auxiliary instrumentation, and tools.
•    Prepare drafts of test reports. 
•    Actively participate in routine calibrations of test equipment and instrumentation, and in updating the calibration records.
•    Take interest in software upgrades for the test equipment. 
•    Provide help in keeping inventory of tools, instrumentation, consumables, and test articles. 
•    If required, perform relevant literature searches. 
•    Perform other duties as requested or assigned by the High Voltage Testing Manager or Consulting Engineer. 
•    May perform some design and theoretical work, but does not possess the educational background required to function as an Engineer.
•    May perform same work as titled Engineers, but possesses an engineering degree which is not ABET-accredited.


The position is located in Petersburg, VA and will work on-site.  Relocation may be offered to the successful candidate. 

Apart to standard 5 days x 8 hours per day work schedule, we offer an option of working 9 hours a day with every second Friday off subject to change due to business needs. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

 

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
 

•    7-8+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline. In-depth and comprehensive knowledge of engineering principals, theories and practices.
•    In-depth knowledge of industry codes, government regulations and company policies and practices.
•    n-depth knowledge of design and operation of complex systems and equipment.
•    Ability to apply expert knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve complex and broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
•    Ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadlydefined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
•    Strong oral, written and graphical communication skills including technical writing; ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
•    Ability to conduct standard tests, measurements and experiments. Ability to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes.
•    Equally effective working independently and in a team environment. Excellent organization and project management skills and evaluation techniques.
•    Excellent personal computer skills including knowledge of applicable software programs.
•    Strong leadership skills.
•    Proven decision making skills.
•    Ability to address issues applying analytical and abstract thinking. Ability to resolve problems and process information quickly.
 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
•    Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g., Matlab, Excel, etc.).
•    Design and drafting skills using 2D and 3D design software, such as AutoCAD, Solid Works, Solid Edge.
•    Comfortable with heights up to 140ft, and in addition, an ability to perform selected tasks on elevations up to 50ft using an articulated boom lift or a scissor-lift.

Education Requirements

 

Degree equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

Bachelor's Degree

 

In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:

- 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or

- 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or

- 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or

- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
