Job Summary

There is one position which will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidates education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities. This role will be located at our Locks facility in Petersburg, VA. 

 

Entry or developmental level position providing engineering support in designing and coding automated test plans to support commissioning and maintenance of protective relays. Power system modeling and analysis. Performing/Supporting protection studies including Hardware-in-the-Loop setting validation. Performs engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks.  Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.

Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

  • Engineer I (0-2 years of relevant engineering experience;
  • Engineer II (3+ years of relevant engineering experience) PLUS a bachelor's degree in engineering for Titled Engineers
  • Engineering Technical Specialist I (0-2 years of relevant engineering experience;
  • Engineering Technical specialist II (3+ years of relevant engineering experience) PLUS a Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or related additional experience
     
  • Programming skills in one or more of the following languages a plus: Python, Visual Basic, C#
  • Experience with specialized power engineering tools, such as PSS/E, ASPEN, PSCAD, RSCAD, RTDS, OPAL-RT HYPERSIM, or MATLAB is a plus.
  • Comfortable with interpreting and implementing functions from programming documentation
  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory;
  •  Troubleshoot coding problems quickly and efficiently 
  •  Experience with working on medium/large software projects preferred; personal or professional
  •  Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
  • Effective decision making skills;
  • Computer skills and application of software programs;
  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems; 
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices;
  • Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills;
  • Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks;
  • Ability to work within a team environment. 

Education Requirements

Education Level for Engineer I and Engineer II: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required. 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license

 

Education Level for Engineering Technical Specialist I/II: Preferred Bachelor degree's or equivalent combination of experiene in lieu of preferred degree also accepted:

In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
     

Upcoming engineering graduates with a projected graduation date of no later than May 31, 2024, who also meet above criteria will be considered.
