Job Summary
Assist with the inspection, testing, service, repair, calibration, and installing indicating, recording, and automatic control instruments such as flow meters, pressure gauges, thermometers, regulators, and similar components in a power station. Assist in locating cause of defective performance of instruments, report findings to supervisor, and replace component parts as required. Use portable pressure gauges, manometer, and other similar test equipment. Perform preventive maintenance. Test flue gas, read meters, and record data as required.
Specific business unit duties may include the following:
Assisting in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of basic instrumentation and control systems on the offshore wind farms. The role focuses on learning the operation of systems on the wind turbines and both the onshore and offshore substations such as sensors, transmitters, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in operations. Under the guidance of more experienced technicians, the technician supports preventive maintenance activities and follows safety and compliance protocols.
This position demands a proactive and safety-conscious approach to working in a challenging and dynamic offshore environment, ensuring the reliability and safety of critical wind generation systems while adhering to industry standards and best practices. Understanding of the basic electric grid, including transmission and substation operations, as well as knowledge of NERC compliance, including evidence collection and documentation, is essential for maintaining the integrity and regulatory compliance of offshore wind operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
Instrument Technician I- 0-2 years relevant experience in mechanical electrical, and instrumentation work.
Instrument Technician II- 3+ years relevant experience in mechanical electrical, and instrumentation work.
Instrument Technician III- 5+ years relevant experience in mechanical electrical, and instrumentation work.
For jobs in an offshore or marine environment may prefer:
Familiarity with offshore-specific equipment, safety protocols, and procedures is advantageous.
Experience with PLCs, VFDs (variable frequency drive), and remote monitoring systems commonly used in offshore wind farms is preferred.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of AC and DC electrical theory, including knowledge of electrical symbols and formulas, is required. Proficiency in reading and interpreting offshore-specific wiring diagrams, instruments, and electrical schematics is crucial. Familiarity with SCADA systems used for monitoring and controlling offshore wind turbines is beneficial.
Compliance and NERC Standards:
Must be knowledgeable about North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards, particularly those relevant to wind energy generation. Experience or training in compliance activities such as gathering evidence, conducting inspections, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements is a plus. Participation in compliance audits and knowledge of how offshore systems integrate with grid reliability standards are critical.
Electric Grid and Substation Knowledge:
A basic understanding of the electric grid, including transmission systems and substations, is necessary. Knowledge of how offshore wind energy is integrated into the grid, the role of substations in stepping up or down voltage levels, and the overall transmission process from generation to distribution.
Daily Reporting and Recordkeeping:
Helps maintain daily operations logbooks by documenting tasks, maintenance activities, and repairs completed during shifts.
Internal and External Compliance to Safety Standards:
Follows internal safety protocols and external regulatory guidelines while performing tasks in the offshore environment. Assists in maintaining safety standards, attending training sessions, and adhering to industry regulations.
Tools & Equipment:
Must be proficient in using precise measuring tools and be familiar with the tools and equipment specific to power generation work.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically fit to work in an offshore environment, including the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and under adverse weather conditions. Must be able to work on vessels and offshore platforms and perform tasks requiring heavy lifting and prolonged standing. Respirator qualification and the ability to wear full-body harness are required.
Communication:
Good written and verbal communication skills are required, with the ability to effectively communicate in a multi-disciplinary offshore team.
Work Schedule:
Subject to offshore rotations, overtime, and unscheduled callouts after hours, weekends, and holidays. Must be prepared for offshore deployments and fieldwork at short notice.
For Offshore Wind (OSW) Instrumentation Technician:
Ability to climb to heights up to 250 feet or greater and work in confined spaces
Must meet body weight restrictions of 265 lbs. or less as required by the safety regulations.
Must pass a physical administered by a medical practitioner to ensure ability to safely perform the job functions and meet the physical demands of the position.
Subject to offshore rotations, overtime, and unscheduled callouts after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Education Requirements
Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:
Associate
Discipline Preferred: Technical
Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
Offshore certifications:
Preferred for Offshore Wind Technicians: Global Wind Organization (GWO) certification, offshore survival training (such as HUET), and medical certification.
