Job Summary

This role is the intermediate and fully proficient progression level in the Safety Specialist series.  Recommends and administers various company safety and fire protection policies and programs.  Responsible for providing safety oversight and technical support for Corporate, Gas Infrastructure, Power Delivery, or Power Generation groups.  Provides oversight, coaching, advice, technical expertise and training on safety, fire prevention, construction and operational work methods.  Acts as a first responder to safety incidents and gathers and evaluates accident data. Conducts root cause analysis of safety incidents and recommends preventive actions.  Identifies potential safety risks and implements corrective measures.  Performs safety and/or fire protection inspections and monitors and evaluates work practices to ensure compliance with all OSHA, regulatory and company safety policies and programs.  Maintains awareness of governmental regulations and policies that may impact company operations.  Tests, researches and recommends new tools, systems and equipment, and ensures compliance with technical specifications.  Develops, implements and conducts safety and fire protection training and presentations.  May administer public safety programs for internal and external stakeholders such as first responders, contractors and schools.   Assists in the development of Accident Prevention Manuals, and technical training programs and materials.  Works closely with managers, supervisors, safety committees, and other colleagues to develop risk reduction plans and supports other safety initiatives.  Investigates third party safety incidents, often working closely with the claims department and regulators. 
 
Specific Business Unit duties may include the following: 
 
Gas Infrastructure:  Identifies, evaluates and controls chemical exposures in the workplace, and performs other industrial hygiene related activities such as coordinating hearing conservation, respirator and medical surveillance programs.    
 
Power Delivery:  Provides technical expertise in complex work activities, including qualifying gloving supervisors, switch operator training, unsupervised gloving lineman qualifications, and storm restoration work.   
 
Power Generation:  Provides oversight for generation and construction projects including Coal Combustion Products and Renewable Projects (Wind and Solar). Performs combustible dust surveys and equipment evaluation for fossil fuel and bio-mass locations.       
 
Corporate Safety / Services:  Facilitates companywide standardization of safety equipment, methods and practices. Identifies opportunities for efficient delivery of safety program capabilities and services.  Provides company-level and business group-specific reporting of safety performance metrics.  Provides input related to safety goals and performance in support of corporate sustainability and responsibility reporting.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

3+ years of directly related experience;

Understanding of company safety policies and work methods;

Knowledge of applicable safety and fire protection regulations and requirements;

Technical proficiency in applicable job specific discipline;

Management Service (MMS) requirements;

Knowledge of applicable hazardous material/chemical management and transportation;

Job specific knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and surveying techniques;

Strong communication, writing, interpersonal and coaching skills;

Good public speaking/presentation skills;

Good planning and organizational skills;

Good analytical skills;

Proficient computer skills;

Ability to perform accident/incident investigations.

Education Requirements

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

Bachelor

Preferred Disciplines: Fire Protection, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Occupational Safety

Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
