Job Summary
Provide radiological protection to protect the health and safety of the general public and employees from the hazards of radiation through surveys, analyses, sampling and compliance with regulations, standards and procedures. Provide job coverage for radiological concerns during routine and special plant maintenance activities. Perform routine and random radiation surveys (including personnel exposure, equipment contamination, air samples) to assess radiological conditions. Prepare and monitor Radiation Work Permits. Inspect, calibrate and maintain radiological protection instrumentation and sampling equipment. Provide technical expertise and support to all radiological protection program elements. Evaluate regulatory and industry standards for applicability to radiological control activities. Prepare, analyze, survey, package and ship radioactive material and waste.
Health Physics Technician I:
- Participates primarily in classroom training learning the basic concepts of radiological protection.
- Perform frisker source checks and routine decontamination procedures.
- Collect routine radiological air samples.
- Issue respiratory protection and Health Physics Instrumentation.
- Perform laundry facility duties.
Health Physics Technician II:
- Perform routine radiological surveys, sampling and analysis to determine radiation hazards.
- Perform radiological surveys and samples and document results to ensure compliance with established procedures and limits.
- Perform operability checks, calibration and repair, of various health physics instrumentation.
- Attend formal classroom training sessions and maintain acceptable academic standards.
- Perform assigned duties in support of the Emergency Response Team.
- Update and maintain routine personnel exposure records.
Health Physics Technician III:
- Monitor and control internal external personnel exposure, contamination, radioactive materials and waste.
- Perform routine and specialized radiological surveys
- Provide health physics job coverage for radiological work activities.
- Install and maintain ventilation units for airborne radioactivity.
- Monitor and assess internal personnel exposure.
- Perform deconning of personnel, small tools and contaminated areas.
- Perform other duties as requested or assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
Health Physics Technician I:
- HS Diploma/GED and 0-1 year of related experience.
- Successful completion of TECH Test administered during the selection process.
- Good math skills and ability.
- Must be able to fulfill duties as directed for Station Emergency Plan to include obtaining and maintaining required ERO/SERO qualifications, participation in ERO/SERO exercises and drills, verifying availability through response to ERO/SERO call in drills.
Health Physics Technician II:
- Associate degree and 1-2 years of related experience
- Completion of step one of the Health Physics Technician Development Program or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Health Physics Technician T1 requirements.
Health Physics Technician III:
- Associate degree and 2-3 years of related experience
- Completion of the first three steps of the Health Physics Technician Development Program or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Health Physics Technician T1 requirements.
Completion of Health Physics Technician Development Program or equivalent knowledge and experience (generally 3+ years).
Must be able to fulfill duties as directed for Station Emergency Plan to include obtaining and maintaining required ERO/SERO qualifications, participation in ERO/SERO exercises and drills, verifying availability through response to ERO/SERO call in drills.
Education Requirements
Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:
Associate

ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.5.3.1, 4.5.3.2, and 4.5.3.3 and Regulatory Guide 1.8, Revision 4, Staff
Regulatory Guidance, 1.5 for Radiation Protection Technicians Education requirements: High school diploma
Minimum experience for the position:
Related experience which shall include 2 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience 1 yr.
Note: In regard to “related experience” for radiation protection technicians, 2000 working hours is acceptable as representing one year of experience. There is no expectation of a minimum timeframe for accumulating these 2000 hours (e.g., not less than 40 weeks), nor is there a limit applied to the amount of hours that can be credited in a week. However, no more than 2000 hours can credited toward related experience for radiation protection technicians in any one calendar year.
