Job Summary
Associate Nuclear Chemistry Technician
Independently performs chemical analyses on gases, fluids and solids in and around the nuclear power station. This is the fully qualified level. Independently collects and performs chemical analyses on gases, liquids and solids from process streams throughout the plant. Operates a variety of chemical test and analytical equipment including spectrophotometers, titration devices, ion chromatographs, gas chromatographs, atomic absorption and emission spectrometers, pH meters and conductivity cells. Maintains, calibrates, standardizes, and performs preventative maintenance on chemistry bench-top and in-line instrumentation and equipment. May serve as the shift lead to provide the requisite level of technical expertise to less experienced technicians. Assists in the training and qualification of students enrolled in the Nuclear Chemistry Technician Training program. Performs administrative duties in support of department operations, including procedure review and development, periodic test scheduling, and management reporting. Responds to a variety of system and process alarms, including turbine or reactor trip, and main condenser impurity ingress. Actively supports all elements of the laboratory quality control and quality assurance program and regulatory inspections. Undertakes special projects and studies as designated by laboratory supervision, and participates in self-assessments and Training Review Board meetings. Participates in the station's emergency response organization. Performs work activities with other station departments, vendors and contractors. Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule.
Senior Nuclear Chemistry Technician
Independently collect and perform chemical analyses on gases, liquids and solids from process streams throughout the plant. Operate a variety of chemical test and analytical equipment including spectrophotometers, titration devices, ion chromatographs, gas chromatographs, atomic absorption and emission spectrometers, pH meters and conductivity cells. Maintain, calibrate, standardize, and perform preventative maintenance on chemistry bench-top and in-line instrumentation and equipment.
Implement and monitor chemistry control processes and programs to assure the material integrity and long-term reliability of plant components, and that all regulatory requirements are met. This includes: primary, secondary and auxiliary system treatment chemical receipt, batching, injection and addition; activities associated with the discharge of radioactive and chemical-bearing wastewater streams; and operation or direct support of operations related to condensate polishing.
Coordinate lab operations and perform attendant administrative duties. May serve as the shift lead to provide the requisite level of technical expertise to less experienced technicians, and coordinate and assign work activities of technicians. Act as technical lead to less experienced technicians and assist in the monitoring of the training of individuals still in the training program.
Assist supervisor in assigning and reviewing work done by the less experienced technicians. Perform more advanced chemical sampling, analyses, testing and data evaluation. Actively support all elements of the laboratory quality control and quality assurance program and regulatory inspections. Conduct special projects and studies as designated by laboratory supervision, and participate in self-assessments and Training Review Board meetings. Participate in the station's emergency response organization.
Perform work activities with other station departments, vendors and contractors.
Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
Associate Nuclear Chemistry Technician
Completion of Nuclear Chemistry Technician training program. Qualification as a shift-qualified Nuclear Chemistry Technician, which includes 2 years of applicable experience.
Senior Nuclear Chemistry Technician
Designation as Senior Nuclear Chemistry Technician will be approved by Chemistry management, and will be based upon an individual's sustained, high level of performance, and the needs of the department. The individual must be current in shift qualifications at an operating unit at Millstone, Surry, VC Summer or North Anna Station. The individual must have a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience with preferred Associate's degree (including completion of the Nuclear Chemistry Technician Development Program).
Additionally, the individual must possess one of the following qualifications:
- The individual must exhibit knowledge of chemistry instruments, both lab and inline. Individual must exhibit instructional traits in order to expand instrument knowledge base among personnel. Knowledge should include operation, maintenance and repair/troubleshooting of said instruments. Individual would be expected to utilize this knowledge in routine maintenance/repair of instruments.
- Individual must exhibit system and program knowledge at a level that far exceeds that expected of a normal shift technician. Individual must possess and utilize leadership traits to benefit the department's growth.
Education Requirements
Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:
Associate
Preferred Discipline(s): Mathematics, Chemistry, Science
Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
Must be able to fulfill duties as directed for Station Emergency Plan to include obtaining and maintaining required ERO/SERO qualifications, participating in ERO/SERO exercises and drills, and verifying availability through response to ERO/SERO call-in drills.
ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.5.3.1, 4.5.3.2 and 4.5.3.3. Education Requirements: HS Diploma, Minimum Experience for the job: Related experience which shall include 2 years; Nuclear Power Plant Experience 1 year.
