Job Summary

This position will be filled at a II or III level depending on qualifications of successful candidate.


The Sr. Projects Designer position is the mid/senior level in the Electric Distribution Design job classification.  This role will independently serve as a point of contact for internal and external customers for installation of electric distribution facilities, including complex residential, residential subdivision, complex commercial, industrial, governmental reliability, and planning projects. Sr. Projects Designer shall use technical knowledge,  and customer service skills to secure site plans, load letters, and other relevant information to determine customer requirements.  This work additionally includes project site visits, inspections and preparation of complex detailed drawings using ArcFM, AutoCad or other tools as required. 

Through the use of project management skills, the Sr. Projects Designer shall independently maintain and organize a high volume of work assignments.



  • Facilitates or provides determination of material, time and cost estimates for the construction, maintenance and relocation of electric distribution facilities.
  • Utilizes work management system to manage work queue.
  • Prepares, negotiates and secures right of way permits, environmental permits, easement agreements, highway/railroad permits, underground electric service agreements, vault agreements, etc.
  • Reconciles construction as-builts to ensure mapping accuracy in GIS.
  • Provide “on-call” assistance  during emergencies and storm restoration activities; includes travel to any location within Dominion Energy service territory for duration determined by Company.  Expected to use electronic damage assessment tools to provide data for restoration analysis and customer communication.
  • Performs calculations and designs complex electric distribution facilities based on analysis of customer load requirements, company engineering standards and existing facilities.
  • Coordinates installation/relocation of other utilities (i.e. cable television, telephone, fiber, etc.).
  • Prepares billing authorities, revenue calculations, facilities charges, etc.
  • Manages material reservations. Interprets and communicates company policy and procedures, electric service requirements and project schedule to customers.
  • Conducts field assessment of electrical infrastructure for resource allocation and material needs, and facilitates logistics for storm response.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Minimum Qualifications Sr Projects Designer II

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2+ years directly related experience or
  • Associates Degree and 4+ years of directly related experience


Minimum Qualifications Sr Projects Designer III

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 4+ years directly related experience or
  • Associates Degree and 6+ years of directly related experience
  • Military Service Members/Veterans ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6 4+ years directly related experience
  • High school diploma and 6+ years of directly related experience
  • Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications
  • Directly Related Experience: Electric Distribution Design experience, Utility Design experience, Construction Design experience,  Technical Design, General Electricity / Electrical experience
  • (Current or past Dominion Energy employees) Previous Completion of CPD Training Program is required.
  • Skills:  verbal, written and interpersonal communication; strong computer skills; time management and organization; project management; math and technical aptitude;
  • Abilities:  effectively interact with customers; teaming; detail oriented;
  • Physical attributes to perform essential function of the job: walking, climbing, stooping, bending and prolonged standing.
  • Must have valid driver's license and be able to drive.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electric Distribution and/or Transmission Design Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering Technology (or related discipline)
  • Associates Degree in Business or Engineering Technology (or related discipline)
  • 3+ years directly related experience for II level
  • 5+ years directly related experience for III level
  • Retail / Customer Service Experience
  • Construction Management/Field Operations background
  • GIS/AutoCAD experience
Education Requirements
  • Degree or an equivalent combination of Associates or high school with appropriate years’ of demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.  Preferred disciplines:   Business, Engineering Technology, Construction Management.   Only those engineering degrees from NON-ABET accredited programs will be considered.  All Engineering Technology degrees will be considered (ABET and non-ABET).
