MILITARY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Dominion Energy Military Fellowship Program is a corporate internship which aligns with the Department of Defense SkillBridge program.  SkillBridge authorization allows eligible servicemembers with command approval to participate in corporate internships as their place of duty up to 180 days prior to separation.

 

Servicemember Requirements

To enroll in a corporate internship while still on active duty, the servicemember must be able to meet eligibility compliance, and receive command approval.  Once an internship offer has been extended, the servicemember may proceed in routing a completed program application for command awareness and approval.  The internship cannot commence until you are 180 days or less from your separation date (i.e., EAOS, EAS).

  • Have met all instructional criteria outlined in DODI 1322.29, and relevant Service instructions
  • Obtain command approval to participate (i.e., signature required on Intern Application)
  • Provide final notification of command approval to the Employer

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Dominion Energy has one (1) Military Fellowship position for a System Protection Technician T1 / T2.  This work experience may be up to 12 weeks in duration as agreed upon by the selected Service member and approved by their military command.

Job Description:

NOTE:  This posting represents one (1) position which will be filled at the level (System Protection Technician T1 or System Protection Technician T2) commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

The System Protection Technician T1 / T2 performs maintenance, installation and corrective activities on system protection devices, control circuits, metering, and communication equipment (both data and PLC) within Dominion's Transmission, Distribution and Generating network. All maintenance, installation and corrective activities performed under direct supervision from Tech/Senior/Lead technician.

 

Responsibilities include the following.

  • Ensuring that appropriate compliance maintenance activities, applications, policies, and associated documentation are managed and maintained in support of Electric Transmission Field Operations (ETFO) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and Protective Relay and Control (PRC) programs.
  • Maintenance activities include instruction/guidance in routine cleaning, calibration and functional operational testing of all primary electro-mechanical and microprocessor protection applications.
  • Assisting during routine testing and functional verification of all communications equipment including data, fiber optic, and power line carrier.
  • Assisting during functional operational testing of substation auxiliary equipment and verification of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data systems that provide the operating centers with real time operating and alarm information.
  • Assisting with protective relay and control equipment repairs.
  • Installation activities include assisting Lead/Senior technicians' functional verification of all primary and secondary equipment as designed by Dominion and its manufacturers.
  • Corrective activities include assisting Lead/Senior technicians in analyzing alarms, identifying potential problems, and developing safe and effective basic corrective action investigation plans.
  • Activities regarding potential cyber issues related to protection and control devices require that security assessments be performed to verify the integrity of cyber security control at substation locations.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCES

System Protection Technician T1:

  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below.
  • 0-2 years directly related experience including, but not limited to, electrical, electro-mechanical, system protection and/or utility scale protection experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)
  • Active, valid government-issued driver license is required for this role
  • Basic knowledge of operation and maintenance of control circuits and protective relay applications
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Abilities: test basic and routine types of protective relays; lift up to 50 lbs.; manual dexterity; color vision; hearing; climbing; stooping; standing; bending.
  • Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds
  • This position also requires the ability to respond to emergency call-outs
  • This position requires you to work extensively outdoors in the elements and different weather conditions operating machinery

System Protection Technician T2:

  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below.
  • 2+ years directly related experience including, but not limited to, electrical, electro-mechanical, system protection and/or utility scale protection experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)
  • Active, valid government-issued driver license is required for this role
  • Basic understanding of operation and maintenance of protective relay and control applications and substation equipment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Abilities: Test basic to moderately complex types of protective relays, remote terminal units, power line carrier and metering equipment; plan and organize basic substation construction projects
  • Abilities: test basic and routine types of protective relays; lift up to 50 lbs.; manual dexterity; color vision; hearing; climbing; stooping; standing; bending
  • Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds
  • This position also requires the ability to respond to emergency call-outs 
  • This position requires you to work extensively outdoors in the elements and different weather conditions operating machinery

Education Requirements

Associate degree or higher (or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education)

 

  • Vocational / technical certificate or degree in an electrical or power discipline is a plus, but not required
  • Candidates projected to graduate no later than August 31st, 2021 can be considered for this role
  • Preferred Disciplines:  Instrumentation Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Electrical, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Electromechanical Technology, Electronics Technology.
  • Other electrical-focused disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.

WORK SCHEDULE

Work schedules are to be determined by the hiring leader in agreement with the fellow.

  • Schedules should align with departments regular work schedule(s) and may include flex schedules.
  • Work hours should not exceed 40 hours per week or 80 hours per 2 weeks.
  • Military fellows should not work overtime hours unless previously arranged for developmental or special business purposes.
