Job Summary
The System Protection Engineering department ensures power system security and reliability through consistent application of protective relay settings and data communication networks per industry standards and regulatory requirements.
System Protection Engineers develop settings for protective relays that detect and isolate electrical faults on the power system. The primary responsibilities for this role include the design, modeling, and development of protective relay settings for up to 69kV equipment. This includes schemes related to interconnection of distributed energy resources and new technologies such as implementing IEC 61850.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and/or review protective relay settings, perform engineering calculations, analysis, and research for Electric Transmission protection schemes inside the substation.
- Provide advanced technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects.
- Participate in various company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance ET’s system protection performance.
- Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
Associate Engineer: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience;
Engineer: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience;
Senior Engineer: 5-6+ years of relevant engineering experience;
Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience;
(Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; an advanced degree can count as one year experience)
- Candidates should have an electrical or computer engineering background, preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Effective working independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to think analytically and apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems.
- Experience with short circuit modeling software preferred. (e.g., Aspen ONELINER or PSS®CAPE)
- Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection is a plus.
- Experience with SAP work management systems is a plus.
- Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, etc.) is a plus.
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
Education Requirements
Required Degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):
Bachelor’s in Engineering
REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
Spring 2026 graduates may be considered for this position.
