Job Summary
This job plays a critical role in enhancing Dominion Energy's wildfire preparedness and response capabilities. This position is responsible for developing and refining fire weather decision support tools and visualization platforms to improve situational awareness across the organization. This role monitors and interprets fire weather models, forecast data, and satellite imagery to identify emerging wildfire risks within the service territory.
Key responsibilities include delivering daily and event-driven fire weather briefings, including Fire Potential Index (FPI) and fire behavior assessments, and supporting Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) decision-making through real-time analysis and threshold evaluations. The role also involves educating internal teams on fire weather dynamics through training sessions and guidance materials. The specialist contributes to wildfire mitigation planning, participates in emergency preparedness exercises and incident reviews, and provides analytical support during wildfire events. Additionally, they develop dashboards and visual tools to inform leadership and guide strategic decisions, while offering subject matter expertise and internal training on fire data analytics.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
- 3+ of relevant experience in meteorology, fire weather forecasting, emergency management, or environmental science or other directly related experience.
- Working knowledge of fire weather indices (e.g., Haines Index, ERC, Fosberg Index), fuels, and topographic influences on fire behavior.
- Experience using tools such as the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS), WIMS, or other fire modeling platforms.
- Clear and precise communication skills via various methods and to different audiences.
- Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
- Ability to work under pressure during high-impact weather and wildfire events.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle emergency response situations and to work in a stressful environment.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities and strategic direction.
- Ability to operate as a self-starter and meet deadlines.
- Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.
- Ability to work independently with little day-to-day guidance.
- Ability to manage and develop/maintain strong positive relationships with people at all levels within the company.
Education Requirements
Education Level: Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:
Bachelors
Preferred discipline(s): Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Forestry or Fire Science.
Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
Summer 2026 graduates may be considered for this opportunity.
