Job Summary

 

There are 3 openings that will be filled as a Transmission Forestry Specialist I or II based on the successful candidates experience.

 

The Transmission Forestry Specialist I works under the direction of more experienced team members, responsible for forestry-related activities, specifically patrolling lines and directing and inspecting the work of contract crews to meet transmission line safety, reliability and compliance requirements in the assigned Forestry area within the transmission system.

  • Conducts field observations of tree trimming and landscape maintenance contractors to ensure that adequate clearance between trees, brush and electrical conductors is maintained.
  • Provides feedback on vegetation conditions and crew productivity.
  • Examine plans and specifications to determine work procedures and costs

 

The Transmission Forestry Specialist II is responsible for forestry-related activities, specifically patrolling lines and directing and inspecting the work of contract crews to meet transmission line safety, reliability and compliance requirements in the assigned Forestry area within the transmission system. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Works independently, usually scheduling his/her time without guidance.
  • Conducts field observations of tree trimming and landscape maintenance contractors to ensure that adequate clearance between trees, brush and electrical conductors is maintained.
  • Provides information on field conditions and crew productivity and provides input on suggested scheduling of vegetation management work.
  • Examines plans and specifications to determine work procedures and costs

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

 

Transmission Forestry Specialist I

  • 0-2 years directly related experience with a preferred Bachelors Degree (Or 2+ years of directly related experience with an Associate Degree; Or 4+ years of directly related experience with a High School degree or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of arboriculture, urban horticulture, forest management, dendrology, landscape maintenance principles, tree trimming techniques and herbicide applications
  • Basic knowledge of electric principles and transmission circuitry
  • Basic knowledge of accounting and contract administration

 

Transmission Forestry Specialist II

  • At least 4 years of directly related experience with a preferred Bachelor's Degree (Or 6+ years of directly related experience with an Associate Degree; Or 8+ years of directly related experience with a High School degree or equivalent)
  • Full knowledge of arboriculture, urban horticulture, forest management, dendrology, landscape maintenance principals, tree trimming techniques, and herbicide application
  • Good knowledge of electrical principles and transmission circuitry
  • Good knowledge of accounting and contract administration

 

Note for both:

  • A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications
  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above/below)

Education Requirements

Education Level:

Preferred Bachelor Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Transmission Forestry Specialist I

Within two years of starting in this role, must obtain an Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, an Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification from the Department of Environmental Quality, and Commercial Applicator (Pesticide) Certification from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Transmission Forestry Specialist II

Retains current Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, current Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification from the Department of Environmental Quality, and current Commercial Applicator (Pesticide) Certification from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
