Job Summary

  • Assumes full responsibility for an assigned Transmission Forestry area with regard to coordinating and monitoring forestry activities, including scheduling, patrolling, directing and inspecting the work of tree trimming and landscape maintenance contract crews and transmission right-of-way maintenance.
  • Responsible for the completion of all such work that must meet line safety, reliability and compliance requirements.
  • Coordinates forestry activities with Transmission, Construction, Real Estate, and Permitting groups.
  • Has full responsibility for the contractor services budget within their transmission forestry area.
  • Responsible for meeting NERC and PJM vegetation management requirements and budget targets.
  • Lays out scheduling strategy to accomplish work through the use of contractors, and modifies work plans as needed.
  • Examines plans and specifications to determine work procedures and costs.
  • Monitors and evaluates operational costs and performance of tree trimming and landscape maintenance contractors.
  • Functions as point of contact in negotiating use of herbicides on federal and state lands (specifically with the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Forest Service) and maintains close ties with municipalities (and assigned Municipal Arborists) for transmission forestry work being conducted in various jurisdictions.
  • Reviews and approves contractor labor worksheets and invoices.
  • Resolves customer complaints up through the most complex and serious issues that cannot be resolved at the Forestry Specialist levels.
  • Trains and mentors any Forestry Specialist(s) assigned to them.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • 6+ years of directly related experience in Utility Arboriculture.
  • Advanced knowledge of arboriculture, urban horticulture, forest management, dendrology, landscape maintenance principals, tree trimming techniques, and herbicide application.
  • Advanced knowledge of the identification of trees and growth habits, use of herbicides, rehabilitation, right of way management.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles and transmission circuitry.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and contract administration.
  • Skills: Strong written and oral communications, strong customer service, effective organizational and project management.
  • Abilities: Demonstrated problem-solving and quick decision-making, setting priorities, working independently, public relations, interpersonal skills and leadership.
  • Essential job duties include walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and hearing.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.

Preferred Discipline: Forestry 

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Retains current Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, current Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification from the Department of Environmental Quality, and current Commercial Applicator (Pesticide) Certification from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
