Survey Technician II/III (GLEN ALLEN, VA)

We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Survey Technician II

This role is competent in all conventional survey aspects of providing land surveying support associated with the establishment of transmission lines, substations, and miscellaneous projects company-wide (under the direction of supervisor and/or work leaders). Provides direction and schedules survey field crews. Attends project meetings and prepares survey project work summaries. Coordinates survey requests between company and approved contractors. Analyzes and interprets plans and specifications to determine work procedures. Compiles and calculates survey data. Verifies and approves drawings to ensure adherence with survey fundamentals, specifications and established company standards. Approves and processes survey field notes and transmits to internal departments. Researches both internal and external data records to obtain right of way, easement and company fee owned documents and deeds. Provides GIS support as assigned. Reviews and approves contractor invoices. Performs quality control checks on LIDAR survey data files. Reviews, approves and transmits PLS CAD survey files to be used by transmission engineering. Determines methods and procedures for establishing or re-establishing survey grade control.

 

Survey Technician III

This senior level position within the survey department independently performs difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter (to include all land survey disciplines associated with transmission lines, substations, and various projects that include easement and boundary line issues). Provides surveying support, expertise and leadership to fellow team members. Provides direction and schedules survey field crews. Attends project meetings and prepares survey project work summaries. Coordinates survey requests between company and approved contractors. Analyzes and interprets plans and specifications to determine work procedures. Compiles and calculates survey data. Verifies and approves drawings to ensure adherence with survey fundamentals, specifications and established company standards. Approves and processes survey field notes and transmits to internal departments. Researches both internal and external data records to obtain right of way, easement and company fee owned documents and deeds. Provides GIS support as assigned. Schedules and coordinates related assignments to meet time and cost objectives. Reviews and approves contractor invoices. Performs quality control checks on LIDAR survey data files. Reviews, approves and transmits PLS CAD survey files to be used by transmission engineering. Determines methods and procedures for establishing or re-establishing survey grade control. Prepares specifications and detailed standard reports to support survey procedures. Prepares surveying cost estimates for the project process.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Survey Technician II: Minimum of 2+ years of experience required (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

  • Full knowledge of surveying theories and principles
  • Full knowledge of CAD
  • Full knowledge of algebra, trigonometry and geometry
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to analyze drawings and specifications and to make precise decisions
  • Effective planning and organization skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of Global Positioning System practices and procedures
  • Working knowledge of PLS CAD software
  • Working knowledge of various GIS software and applications
  • Proficiency in construction layout
  • Preferred, experience with land-surveying rules and regulations in the state of Virginia.

Survey Technician III: Minimum of 5+ years of experience required (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

  • Strong knowledge of surveying theories and principles
  • Strong knowledge of CAD,
  • Strong knowledge of algebra, trigonometry and geometry
  • Strong leadership skills,
  • Ability to provide guidance to less experienced survey techs
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to analyze drawings and specifications and to make precise decisions
  • Strong personal computer skills
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member
  • Working knowledge of Global Positioning System practices and procedures
  • Working knowledge of PLS CAD software
  • Working knowledge of various GIS software and applications
  • Proficiency in construction layout
  • Preferred, experience with land-surveying rules and regulations in the state of Virginia.
