Job Summary

The Physical Design Standards Consulting Engineer – Substation Engineering Standards serves as the organization’s senior technical authority for substation physical design standards, with a mechanical or electrical engineering focus supporting the full lifecycle of substation infrastructure.

This role provides expert-level leadership in the development, interpretation, and governance of engineering standards, typical drawings, material specifications, and design requirements that enable safe, consistent, and high‑quality substation designs across capital projects and O&M work.

The position functions as a key technical consultant to engineering staff, project teams, EPC partners, and management on complex physical design challenges, such as equipment layout and arrangement, bus system considerations, grounding fundamentals, raceway systems, and interfaces among major substation equipment and facilities, while supporting long‑term reliability and constructability.

Responsibilities include leading major standards initiatives, executing and/or guiding engineering studies, reviewing and improving existing materials and design practices, developing and maintaining purchase specifications, and supporting modernization of design platforms and standard deliverables (e.g., CAD and Autodesk-based workflows.

This role also ensures alignment with applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., ANSI/NESC, IEEE, and NFPA/NEC interfaces) and provides technical leadership within the Standards organization through mentoring, training development, peer review, and cross‑disciplinary coordination to mitigate risk and drive consistent engineering outcomes enterprise‑wide.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience with general arrangement, one-line diagrams, and substation physical design required (experience in equipment layout, grounding, raceway systems, and equipment interfaces.)
  • Demonstrated experience developing, maintaining, or governing engineering standards, specifications, or design criteria.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Recognized expert by other engineers and leadership, serving as an SME providing technical consultation to engineers, project teams, and leadership.
  • Effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Full knowledge of electric T&D engineering theories, standards, and principles with focus on electric transmission substations.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team or project lead.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Strong ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineering staff.
  • Experience with substation design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Autodesk applications) preferred.

Degree required (equivalence not accepted in lieu of degree):

Bachelor in Engineering

Preferred Disciplines: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering 

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Preferred:

Professional Engineer (PE)

Other:

Depending on functional responsibilities and location of position, must review ANS 3.1 12/79, ANSI N18.1-1971 or ANSI/ANS 3.1-1993 and DOM-QA-1 as appropriate.
