We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

A Staff Engineer in ET Engineering Standards – Substation Standards would be responsible for:

  • Leading standard development initiatives in support of ET Construction, ET Operations, ET Field Operations, ET Reliability, and ET Projects (Engineering & Project Management).
  • Provide support for the development of engineering standard drawings and design requirements for the integration of Autodesk as the future substation design platforms of Inventor 3D and AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE).
  • Develop and document engineering and design requirements relating to the application of equipment in substations (examples of substation equipment: circuit breakers, instrument transformers, large power transformers, and miscellaneous yard cabinets and components).
  • Execute and/or lead engineering studies in support of developing strong substation physical design standards.
  • Develop training for design engineers and partner groups in Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution, related to engineering and design principles and standards that relate to the required physical and electrical infrastructure of a substation.
  • Review existing materials, components, and design standards for process improvements, cost savings, and help manage organizational change.
  • Develop and maintain substation purchase specifications for material and components required during the design of substations.
  • Engage in industry forums, and events (CIGRE, IEEE, SEE, NATF, etc.).
  • Engage with industry suppliers and manufacturers (plant/factory visits, substation visits) for assigned materials and components.
  • Provide direct input into substation project plans.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience that are required for entry into this job include the following:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, MATLAB, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience with MicroStation, PLSCADD, Autodesk Design Applications (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.), PSSE, PSCADand/or RTDS modeling software is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.

Required Degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):

Bachelor’s in Engineering

 

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:  

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:  

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Note: Dominion Energy minimum experience and education requirements may exceed stated ANSI standards and candidates must meet the Dominion Energy minimum requirements.

For Nuclear employees, this ANSI standard must be met, all of which is met or exceeded in the Engineer series job summaries with the exception of the Nuclear Power experience requirement of at least 1 year:

ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 Education requirements: Baccalaureate or associate degree in engineering or related science. Minimum experience for the position: Related experience which shall include 2 years; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 year.
