Power Systems & Time-Series Engineer
The nature of the grid is in flux – we on the Engineering Analytics & Modeling team see this challenge and aim to rise to the occasion.
Our team mandate is simple: we aim to bridge the gap between real-world system data and provide consumable business intelligence to help steer the future of how we monitor and manage the grid.
Over the next few years, we are endeavoring on a new body of work that aims to upgrade our Grid with new sensor deployment, network upgrades, and infrastructure upgrades to aid in the development of our time-series capabilities by utilizing high resolution Point on Wave data. Our ability to store and use this data is the next frontier in time series analysis and our ability to diagnose and resolve the next era of system load and generation coming onto the grid.
Our fast-growing team is responsible for the capture, utilization, and application of time-series data. Our work is to steward this data and ensure its analysis and outputs influence our business and the industry to adapt and meet the demands of shifting energy landscape. We seek the curious, the self-motivated, and those driven by the pursuit of driving change.
Disclaimer: No Room for Black Box Engineering
The tendency for applying artificial intelligence skills to any data is rampant today – the hype cycle is at full tilt. We discourage any applicants looking to extend their AI/ML research or indiscriminate use of data science techniques geared towards black box solutions and non-explainable outcomes. Our team is glass box -- our research and analysis is used to guide the development of the grid, and for said reason, we welcome applicants with a strong background in statistical practices, explainable analysis, and the development of transparent power system techniques to apply to this role.
Job Summary
This role is three-prong: programmatic technical, engineering, and relationship management. Much of what is tasked for this role requires collaboration with power researchers, signal analysis experts, and software development teams contracted by our Engineering Analytics group. Collaboration is critical – this is not a lone-wolf role, but rather, the application of a strong technical/engineering abilities oriented in developing a new wave of technology for continuous point on wave data.
The expertise we are seeking comes with a professional background and with a proven record of accomplishment in engineering technology deployment, data analysis, and change management. Our pursuit of higher resolution data will only be as valuable as the technical capabilities we will develop to complement. In short, this role is for an engineer with a desire to support and drive the a new set of technologies that will enable the field of high resolution data analysis by lifting the ecosystem of players to capture, store, and deliver engineering capabilities built on the backbone of this newly acquired data.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience.
In addition to required relevant engineering experience, there is a preference for working in the electric utility industry (in Transmission System Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection, Distribution Planning, or Transmission Planning) or 5+ years of research engineering work experience, preferably on directly related projects for the electric utility industry.
A successful candidate will focus on:
Engineering
Engineering principles: this includes practices as well as a strong electrical engineering background, preferably in power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong Power background.
Power Systems Analysis: steady-state and dynamic stability analysis (e.g. PV curve, transient stability, Eigen analysis) including load flow analysis and EMT modeling in PSSE and PSCAD applications respectively (or equivalent software). The candidate should be able to extend this theoretical knowledge to large-scale, practical problems to identify implementable solutions around the use of high-resolution telemetry and an understanding of dynamic behaviors on a power system.
Real-world measurement data analysis: experience analyzing and modeling of electric power systems (e.g. inertia estimation, mode estimation, model validation, state estimation).
Operational modal analysis: This includes the application of signal processing techniques to power system analysis (Fourier transform, SVD, time-frequency analysis).
Dynamics: Preference will be given to candidates with a background in investigation or building practical applications around electronmagnetic transients, switching transients, and harmonics analysis.
Programmatic Analysis Support
The candidate should possess at a minimum intermediate software development skills and have experience using code to solve analytical and automation problems. More specifically, the candidate must demonstrate a degree of proficiency in Python and the common Python scientific computing libraries to support the development of new business capabilities that may be built by more proficient engineers.
Relationship Management
Autonomy and self-starting: We are spearheading a bleeding-edge industry capabilities; we are seeking candidates with the ability to operate independently while aligning to the joint mission of our team.
Strong Communication Skills: Our work will support customers across the organization, strong oral and written communication skills will be a key part of our ability to succeed and penetrate the organization. A strong candidate will be curious and have the mindset to optimize and understand technology, with an ability to effectively communicate necessary changes or updates.
