Senior Training Specialist

Job Summary

This role is responsible for the development, coordination, and oversight of the training programs for Electric Transmission System Operations.  These programs establish department guidelines and govern the practices in employee development and provide initial and continuous training for the System Operators.  Individual in this role will evolve and improve program components to ensure operators have the competence to operate Dominion Energy’s electric transmission system.  This position will also assess and track program effectiveness and communicate results to ET leadership and other business partners.  Individual within this role shall be responsible for:


  • Serving as Instructional Designer for the System Operations training program by creating engaging learning activities and compelling course content, working with subject matter experts to identify target audience training needs and applying tested instructional design theories, practice and methods.
  • Facilitating the Training Advisory Panel.
  • Developing and conducting initial and on-going training classes for the SOC operations team.
  • Using the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) to take the lead on analyzing informational and functional business needs, identifying gaps, establishing objectives, and implementing the appropriate training interventions.
  • Working with  Instructors and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to design and develop training programs and related materials.
  • Approving learning activity content, delivery and assessment methods in accordance with adult learning principles and company, regulatory and industry standards.


Daily responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of the overall implementation, evaluation and maintenance of the ETSOC System Operator Initial and Continuing training program curriculums and related materials.
  • Monitoring established internal controls to ensure that regional and national training, certification and task verification requirements are completed and reported to the appropriate entity within the set timeframes.
  • Oversight of the process for incorporating policy and procedure changes (at the company, regional and national level) into training programs and related materials.
  • Facilitating instructor-led lecture and simulation-based learning activities.
  • Proctoring self-paced and on-the-job learning activities.
  • Partnering with management to prioritize training needs and allocate resources for development and implementation.
  • Assisting management in development and execution of succession plans, recruiting and hiring strategies and on-boarding processes for System Operators
  • Must be highly detail oriented, have strong organization skills and the ability to influence without authority.
  • Individual within this role must be capable of independently performing difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within the designated business area.  
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
  • 5+ years of directly related experience, with Bachelors degree.  7+ years of directly related experience, with Associates degree.  9+ years of directly related experience, with a High School Diploma.
  • Expert knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (including technical writing skills)
  • Excellent personal computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Strong analysis, consulting and problem solving skills
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to train and lead others
  • Ability to process information and questions quickly and develop answers
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment
  • Proven decision making skills
  • Preferred: In-depth knowledge of Electric Transmission Standard Work Practices (SWP)
  • Preferred: In-depth knowledge of industry practices, government regulations and company policies and practice
