Job Summary

As part of Dominion Energy’s Electric Transmission organization, this role manages a team responsible for major equipment engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) ,lifecycle management, and field engineering activities involving Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), and other specialized transmission equipment. The team serves as the technical authority and lifecycle owner for these assets from concept through end -of-life. 

  • Key responsibilities include:
    Overseeing asset management criteria and lifecycle strategies. and leading the development, documentation, and implementation of engineering, design, performance, and reliability requirements for FACTS, HVDC. and specialized substation equipment and turn-key EPC projects.
  • Establishing and governing fleet-wide performance management programs, including asset health monitoring, condition assessment, failure analysis, reliability metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives for FACTS and HVDC assets. 
  • Providing operational engineering support, conducting root cause and failure analysis, and performing or overseeing testing, commissioning, and diagnostic services for Dominion Energy’ FACTS and HVDC systems.
  • Serving as the accountable owner for the FACTS and HVDC spare and critical material strategies and governance program, including spare need assessment, risk-based spare sizing, lifecycle obsolescence planning, vendor coordination, and alignment with supply chain and inventory management teams.
  • Supporting the standardization of EPC projects involving specialized substation, FACTS, and HVDC systems to ensure consistent design, constructability, maintainability, and long-term reliability across installations.
  • Developing and delivering training materials, standards, and operational guidelines for Operations and Field organizations related to  maintenance procedures and response protocols for system events involving FACTS and HVDC systems.
  • Supporting the identification, evaluation, and implementation of innovative technologies and solutions to address FACTS and HVDC equipment challenges,  improve performance, reduce risk, and enhance operational flexibility .
  • Providing strategic leadership, roadmap development, and governance for FACTS and HVDC programs, including alignment with System planning, asset management, procurement, and long-term transmission expansion strategies.
  • Managing relationships with key OEMs, EPC contractors, and technology vendors, including those specializing in FACTS and HVDC systems, to support performance, warranty management, technical issues resolution, and long-term partnership objectives.
  • Coordinating solutions to complex, cross-disciplinary engineering challenges within Electric Transmission, with a focus on integrating FACTS and HVDC systems into the existing AC transmission network and operational environment
  • Facilitating collaboration and partnerships with universities, research organizations, engineering firms, and government agencies to advance technical capabilities and industry best practices.
    Representing Dominion Energy in external technical and industry forums such as PJM  committees, EPRI, CIGRE, IEEE, and peer utility working groups , with active participation on topics related to FACTS, HVDC, and advanced transmission equipment.
    This position is located in Richmond, VA with a hybrid schedule as an option subject to business needs. Relocation assistance may be offered to the successful candidate.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Directly related experience, typically 8+ years (Preferred advanced Electrical Engineering degrees may be considered in calculation of years of directly related experience). 
  • 4+ years in a leadership role is required
  • Experience in supporting or maintaining substation equipment or in equipment manufacturing is desired.
  • Research or Field Experience supporting FACTS devices such as STATCOMS, SVC, Fixed Series Capacitors, HVDC are a plus
  • Strong knowledge of engineering theories, principles, standards, codes, concepts, and their application to problem solving
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Strong personal computer skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Supplier relations management experience
  • In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g., Excel, etc.)
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and general knowledge of managerial and supervisory concepts
  • Thorough knowledge of transmission and substation equipment, design concepts and industry standards

Education Requirements

If degree is listed as preferred, then the degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree. 

Required: Bachelor's degree in Engineering
REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
