Job Summary
The selected Engineering Intern will assist the System Protection Automation & Analysis (SPAA) team in Richmond, Virginia.
System Protection Automation & Analysis ensures electric grid reliability by analyzing system events 24/7 using a combination of technical skills including data processing, software development, and engineering principles. Our strategically deployed monitoring equipment and in-house diagnostic tools enable teams across Dominion Energy to expedite restoration of service, direct fact-finding investigations, and facilitate NERC compliance activities.
A supervisor or engineer mentor will provide the intern with structured assignments designed to develop fundamental engineering knowledge, awareness of industry techniques and practices, and familiarity with power systems equipment. These projects may include components addressing electrical engineering, substation communications, and computer programming.
Past SPAA Engineering Intern projects include:
- Assist with setup and commissioning of monitoring equipment.
- Assist with routine reviews of grid monitoring equipment settings and operations.
- Design a wiring standard for new equipment under the supervision of system protection engineers and field technicians.
- Assist Power Delivery personnel with data requests and operational analysis.
- Provide fault location analysis for Electric Transmission stakeholders.
- Support substation communications with the Regional Operations Center (ROC) and System Operations Center (SOC) System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
- Collaborate with team members to enhance automation of data retrieval and data analytics.
- Support safety, training, and human performance initiatives.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Required to be working towards a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university. It is preferred that the intern have an anticipated graduation date of Spring 2026 or later.
Strong Computing and Programming skills are preferred.
Strong Presentation skills
