Job Summary

Develop standard drawings and requirements for the design of overhead and underground transmission lines and special applications used in the construction and operation of Capital investment and Maintenance projects. Specifically, line design includes foundations, structures (predominantly steel lattice towers and tubular poles), cables and conductor, fiber optic cable and shield wire, insulators, and various components which connect, operate, enclose or support the line conductors and cables. The Line Engineering Standards team is also responsible for development and verification of requirements for standard material and vendor selection, taking an active role within industry forums, and events like IEEE, EPRI, SEE/NESC and NATF to ensure our standards meet or exceed all requirements and recommendations published in the industry.

 

Primary responsibilities include performing engineering work activities and lead projects to develop, maintain, and support system-wide overhead and underground line engineering standards. Providing technical support to other groups for the application and installation of standard designs. Developing and maintain applicable design and calculation tools (i.e. PLSCADD, Pole and Tower, FAD tools, MicroStation, AutoCAD, excel, etc.). Evaluate, qualify and implement new products, applications, and methods to construct, maintain or improve safety, reliability, and efficiency. Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Basic knowledge of computer aided drafting and drafting principles.
  • Basic understanding of the physical design principles and practices
  • Basic knowledge of electrical or mechanical engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory.
  • Basic knowledge of material properties and how they impact performance.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.

Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled in an Engineering degree program at an ABET Accredited four-year college or university 

  • Preferred majors: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering (power systems preferred) 

GPA of 2.5 or higher 

Graduation date of Spring 2026 or later
