Job Summary

Dominion Energy’s ET Planning team is seeking a motivated intern to support the development of transmission expansion plans that ensure system reliability, meet future customer demand, and contribute to achieving our net zero carbon emissions goal by 2050. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in electric utility planning and engineering, working within the PJM Regional Transmission Expansion Planning Process (RTEPP).

  • Assist in evaluating transmission system needs and developing expansion plans.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (ET Planning, Operations Engineering, Substation Execution) and external stakeholders (PJM, Electric Distribution Companies).
  • Support the development of transmission solutions for new substations and data centers.
  • Contribute to competitive FERC Order 1000 processes by proposing innovative and cost-effective solutions.
  • Help prepare project scopes, justifications, and presentations for internal and external approvals.
  • Participate in meetings and discussions with PJM and regulatory bodies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the team’s objectives.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Must have earned a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field and be accepted to and working on a master’s or Ph.D. degree in engineering (preferred fields include electrical engineering with a concentration in power systems, computer engineering, or mechanical engineering with a focus on energy systems) from an ABET accredited Engineering program at a four year or post-graduate college or university.
  • Passionate about solving difficult technical problems, providing innovative solutions and taking ownership of the solutions provided.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and practices.
  • A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as PSS\E, Python, Power Gem’s TARA software, Aspen One-Liner, etc., is preferred
  • General understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including an understanding of three-phase power systems
  • Interest in electric utility systems, including Generation, Transmission, and Distribution.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
  • Self-motivator who has the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information

Education Requirements

  • Must have earned a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field and be accepted to and working on a master’s or Ph.D. degree in engineering (preferred fields include electrical engineering with a concentration in power systems, computer engineering, or mechanical engineering with a focus on energy systems) from an ABET accredited Engineering program at a four year or post-graduate college or university.
  • Candidates must have a 3.2 minimum GPA.
  • Students must have a graduation date of Winter 2026, Spring 2027, or Winter 2027
