Job Summary

Dominion Energy is seeking a 2025 Graduate Student Summer Intern to be a part of the Electric Transmission Planning & Strategic Initiatives team. The selected candidate will provide technical support to the transmission modeling group. Candidates should have a strong electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science background and possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices. A working knowledge of software packages, programming languages, and automation systems such as PSS\E, Python, Power Gem’s TARA, ASPEN One-liner, etc., is also preferred.

Job activities may include:

  • Power system modeling and analysis: steady state load flow studies, transient dynamic studies, and electromagnetic simulations
  • Programming and software development
  • Assisting in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of computer-based tools for the Electric Transmission Planning team
  • Data mining and data analytics
  • Power system network model validation, merging, and management.  
  • Development of detailed substation models

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Candidates must have a graduation date of Winter 2025 or Spring 2026.
  • Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive a company vehicle.
  • General understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, and including an understanding of three-phase power systems, the power grid, and the electric transmission system
  • A working knowledge of and experience with programming and software development, especially with the Python programming language
  • Must possess good communication skills, written and oral
  • General knowledge and understanding of substation components and their functions
  • Ability to read and interpret substation and transmission operating one-line diagrams, and relay functional drawings
  • General understanding of the protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment
  • A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as PSS\E, Python, Power Gem’s TARA software, Aspen One-Liner, etc.
  • Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information

Education Requirements

Must have earned a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field and be accepted to and working on a master’s degree in engineering (preferred fields include electrical engineering or computer engineering or computer science) from an ABET accredited Graduate-level Engineering program at a four year or post-graduate college or university.

  • Candidates must have a graduation date of Winter 2025 or Spring 2026.
  • Candidates must have a 3.2 minimum GPA.
  • Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive a company vehicle.
