We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below will be considered for this opportunity.

Job Summary

This position serves as a support role to develop Substation physical conceptual design and estimates for Dominion’s Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution Substations.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create and/or modify Substation physical design drawings for substation projects including the conceptual General Arrangements and one-line diagrams.
  • Create project cost estimates using material and labor costing database.
  • Make necessary updates to the database to improve accuracy and consistency.
  • Support the implementation of the new estimating platform (Sage Estimating).
  • Compare the Success Enterprise database with Sage database to make sure the data is transferred correctly.
  • Create example estimates on Success Enterprise and Sage Estimating to make comparison between the two estimating platforms.
  • Support engineers to assemble Conceptual Engineering Packages for projects.
  • Participate in site visits to collect data and support the construction group and/or asset owners.
  • Substation project estimating process improvement support.
  • Additional Substation Engineering and CAD responsibilities as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Technical Specialist I: 0-2 years of relevant work experience or demonstrated equivalent.

Technical Specialist II: 5+ years of relevant work experience or demonstrated equivalent.

 

For both levels:

  • Basic knowledge of the electric grid, substation components and their functions.
  • Basic understanding of the Substation design principles and practices for major substation equipment, transmission lines and distribution feeder configurations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and modify Substation one-line diagrams, General Arrangement plan and elevation drawings.
  • Strong drafting and design experience (AutoCAD and Microstation) required.
  • Basic knowledge of computers, keyboarding skills and the use of Microsoft office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and applicable software programs.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Effective decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Education Requirements

Preferred Degree:

  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree.
